Could this be his comeback film? I might end up having to go see this. He did a good job directing Gone Baby Gone.

I thought Gone Baby Gone was great. Was really excited to see this.

Did not think it was good. Mediocre...not terrible, but not good and there have a been a ton of other movies that do the subject matter better.

There is a lot of ridiculous things in it, frankly. Ebert hit on one of them in his review. It all depends on how willing you are to go along with it, I suppose. For some, it'll be the "its a movie" logic. For others, like me, it kills the realism which I like in my crime dramas.

The first time I saw the trailer I wanted to see it. Plus it's Daredevil vs Hawkeye.

Plot spoilers...not of main plot points, but fair warning.

Spoiler: show
Well, there was one chase scene that was completely insane. They managed to get away from police with no problem despite the fact that they would instantly be a number one priority. Second, I hated how the movie had two scenes where the protaganists repeatedly fired automatic weapons at police officers, but managed to hit nobody. I'm not saying I want to see a bunch of officers be shot, but it seemed so transparent what they were trying to do.

Even a guard they supposedly killed turned out to be OK. It just seemed so forced, like they didn't want to kill a cop because then their gang would really be 'bad guys', but it sucked me right out the story because of how ridiculous it was. Even Renner, the supposed wild card, mainly just shoots around people just like the rest of them. It just felt really patronizing. Either make them hardened criminals with likable aspects or don't have them unloading on police officers for a 1/4 of the movie. Don't try to do both just to make sure everybody still likes your main characters. Again, this isn't going to be a complaint shared by everybody (Ebert pointed it out, so I'm glad I'm not the only one), but it really took me out of the movie.

The trailer was awesome. That's the main reason I went to see it right away.

Based on a book that I read called Prince of Thieves. Author is Chuck Hogan who also co-wrote Strain, which I'm currently reading.

They seem to have changed a lot from the book. Hollywood wins again.

I enjoyed it - fun fast paced movie.

I agree with Jim's points above - when compared to a masterpiece like Michael Mann's HEAT (where your points are addressed in a satisfying manner) - this flic falls flat. But still an enjoyable movie all around despite its flaws.

I got to see this on a free screener last week and was pleasantly surprised to find out that Affleck directed it because I went into it knowing nothing about it.

Throughout the movie, I kept thinking that I wanted to find out who the director was because he was deftly telling this story smartly and building tension real well. The car chase scene through Boston was particularly gripping and claustrophobic. I found my hands gripping the arm rests during it.

It's good. It felt a lot like those thrillers of the 70s like Serpico, French Connection, etc.

Agreed.

I think he's an average actor who has been in some circles overrated, then in turn hated in other circles. As to his writing/directing, well, I liked Goodwill Hunting.

I thought he really nailed George Reeves.
(And before you start "fixing" this, remember it's in the playroom)

His biggest sin he made the Jack Ryan franchise come to a sudden halt.
Other than that, he is a decent actor. Amazing that his buddy became the action star....you know who.

I think Affleck's problem was that he was a struggling actor for a number of years (you can see him pop up in lot of films as basically an extra) and then he suddenly hit it big. Then he did nearly everything that was offered to him while someone like Damon was a lot more selective. In one sense, you can't blame the guy, but on the other hand he did a lot of harm to his career doing a lot of bad movies.

This doesn't need to be fixed though.

It's already right there.

I've liked Affleck more in movies where he wasn't the lead. "Shakespeare in Love" and "Good Will Hunting" are the ones that come to mind.

I think that another weak point for Affleck may be that he is open to taking bad direction. Either that or he's just hot and cold as an actor.

It wouldn't ruin a film for me but...

Spoiler: show
...I agree that softening the violence like this makes the film unrealistic and takes away from the high-stakes nature of what these criminals actually do. Instead of dangerous criminals, you make them seem like loveable rascals -- not the vibe I'd think a crime drama is going for.
