The 1960s Batman newspaper strip actually hung on until 1974, although by the last few years it was being run in very few papers, and DC kept trying different gimmicks to drum up interest. The last, and definitely worst, idea was to replace Batman and Robin in their own comic strip, and make Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson the civilian assistants of a new superhero named GALEXO!

Dear Lord.....

If only Bruce had visualized a Lynx, perhaps he could've avoided this tragic fate. Was Galexo an alien or something?

I've never heard about this comic strip before...what a sad end for the 'real' Batman and Robin.

If it had lasted past 1974, I bet that was going to be the next gimmick they tried after Galexo's (inevitable) failure.

You mean somebody's not pulling our leg? This really happened? I could almost see it being tried a couple of decades earlier. Not that it would have been any less of a bad idea then.

This is worse than that short (non-comics) story I read years ago where student Dick Grayson had a Hardy Boys-type adventure with a brief guest appearance by Batman and no mention of Dick's being Robin.

Didn't Galexo turn out to be Superman? Or am I thinking of something else altogether?

Galexo was a new character, never seen before or since, AFAIK.

The awfulness of that is mindblowing.

It's as if it was written by someone who had never read a superhero comic.

Galexo - where was he in the DC reboot?

There was some dispute between DC and the Ledger Syndicate around that time ... over ownership of the series, believe it or not.

Up until that point, DC had been supplying the strip, usually written by E. Nelson Bridwell with art by Nick Cardy and others ... and as I recall, it was pretty good, much improved over the ultra-campy strip that was running in the mid-60s.

Anyway -- and, mind you, this is all going from second-and third-hand information -- Ledger Syndicate decided to "take over" the strip, and started producing it in-house. Adding Galexo to the strip was one of their first moves. At the time, the strip was in so few papers that DC wasn't immediately aware of the substitution. Much legal action was threatened, and Ledger had to cease and desist.

I heard that, before the dust settled, the syndicate actually tried to keep things going by dropping Batman and Robin from the strip and retitling it "Galexo."

Go figure.

I'm intrigued by the fact that Bruce could communicate with Galexo telepathically, but Dick needed to use a radio.
