Anybody see the trailer for this movie this weekend? Looks like it might be fun. Stephen Colbert finally gets to be President! http://www.monstersvsaliens.comI also notice that all the cartoon previews I saw before Despereaux bragged about being in 3-D. I guess studios have finally noticed the box-office success of The Polar Express and Beowulf...

The were passing out trading cards at MidOhio Con. I picked up a bunch of them for youngest son. It does look like fun.
I wonder if Tek Jansen will make an appearance.

If you take a close look, all of the monsters are variation of various famous sci-fi monsters from the fifties and sixties. "Dr. Cockroach" is The Fly. "Insectosaurus" is Them! (Although since the character has attacked Japanese cites, some would say it's really Mothra.) "Ginormica" is Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. (Although I notice from the web site her character is actually 49 Feet 11 inches.) B.O.B. is The Blob. Finally, The Missing Link is The Creature From The Black Lagoon.
What are the monsters REALLY like? "Ginormica" is the newest, and it is probably from her point of view that we learn about the others. Susan Murphy was hit by a meteor the day of her wedding and turned into a giantess. Everyone labelled her a monster and she was taken into custody by the government. She does not think of herself as a "monster", and would rather become normal again. The Missing Link doesn't have any problem being a monster. He's proud of his heritage and thinks of himself as the leader and star of the group. His problem is that he's not quite the stud monster he was in his youth. Think of a scaly version of "Mr. Incredible." Dr. Cockroach's real power, when he isn't eating garbage, is his intellect. In other words, almost as smart as Reed Richards---not nearly as sane. B.O.B. is voiced by Seth Rogan. That should tell you almost all there is to know. His character is comic relief and the real star of the movie. Insectosaurus? Somebody actually read Darin's posts at IMWAN about Cloverfield! I gather that despite this bug's enormous size, he's really a cute pet at heart. Missing Link is the only one who understands him.
Anyway, here's the trailer:

One more thing---I notice that according to the movie's official site, Susan "Ginormica" Murphy's official monster height is 49 feet 11 inches. I don't think that's to avoid being sued by the producers of Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman. I suspect that's a joke that works on two levels. First, women in general are shorter than men, and I strongly suspect that many women like being UNDER six feet for the same reason that guys like to be OVER six feet. But what if you're very close to that limit? You lie. I think that many women who claim to be 5'11" may actually be 6'0". (For the same reason, some 5'10" or 5'11" guys will claim to be 6'0" or 6'1" and wear elevator shoes. 49 ft. 11 inches may be a similar type of fudging.
(Bad@$$ Chuck Norris who is supposedly only 5'7" has a better solution. He produces his action flicks and no guy who is taller than he is cast in his movies.)
But there's a second joke here. Obviously guys will notice the difference between a 5'10" girl and a 5'11" girl----the height difference is noticable. Not so when the girl is as tall as a skyscraper. For Susan to say "I'm only 49 feet 11 inches" is like Taft claiming "I'm only 299 pounds." The fudging isn't fooling anybody!

I noticed that there was no single DVD where you could get JUST the 1958 version of The Fly, so I included the set which had the 1986 David Cronenberg movie, too. The latter is a classic movie in its own right, and I believe that Jeff Goldblum SHOULD have been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance. (BTW, you know what both Flys have in common? Canada. The first movie is set in Montréal, and the characters all have French surnames. The latter movie was directed by a Canadian, and although the setting is never stated in the film, it was shot in ToWANto.) Also, consider getting this film, too: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005N5RM/?tag=imwan-20Ignore the know-nothing reviews from ignoramuses who can't wrap their brains around the fact that horror films are supposed to be SCARY. This film has likable, believable characters, and because it doesn't follow the "rules" as to who should live and who should die, you're always kept on your toes. Shawnee Smith, who later appeared in the Saw films stars, along with Kevin Dillon who now stars in Entourage.

Oh yeah, I'll be there. Either 3D or IMAX 3D, depending on showtime.
Plan to make it a double feature with Haunting in Connecticut.

The clips I've seen so far have looked impressive, and they've all been in 2-D. When they put these 3-D movies on DVD, do they enclose the glasses so you can see them in 3-D again, or are you stuck with 2D?

I saw the movie in IMAX 3-D last night. The 3-D effects looked good, but not so overwheming that you can't enjoy the movie in 2-D. I liked the movie, but this is the type of movie where you have to shut off your brain to enjoy. I can accept that the government has a secret facility where they have imprisoned monsters for half a century. But why use monsters to attack aliens without even CONSIDERING nuclear weapons? Why would the government let the monsters go off unsupervised, even if they do beat a robot probe? (This isn't a spoiler because this isn't Watchmen.) It's a fun movie, and I'm a sucker for good superheroine flick (I must be the only guy on the Eastern seaboard who LIKED Elektra) but this is a shallow movie. If you rent Iron Giant, you'll see a great film that is actually SET during the time period where all these 50's monster movies take place, and because it pays more attention to building up character than just writing gags, the story has a greater effect. It's still a good movie. I just don't think it's quite a GREAT movie.
Oh, I think Janet Van Dyne was uncredited as the movie's costume designer...
