I skipped this series and frankly the "hero gets sent to a gladiatorial combat arena and must liberate it" storyline is a little worn out... but the animation looks OK. I guess I'll check it out if it isn't too pricey.

How is it worn out? One of the reasons why Planet Hulk was so big was precisely because there hadn't been a space gladiator story with a major comic book character in a long, long time.

Ive seen it done with Hulk, The FF, Superman, The JLA, The JLU, and more... just seems like a cliche at this point. Granted that's just what I get from the trailer, not having read the series it may go down a different route.

Recently read Planet Hulk, which was given to me by a co-worker with a man-crush on me, and thought it was the most bad-ass the Hulk has been in a long, long time. An almost perfect fusion of superhero/sword and sorcery, this was right down my alley. That said, I'm not terribly interested in an animated version.

It looks awesome; LOVED Planet Hulk, will love this as well.
To Ross-- yeah, it's been done but so have most comic book stories. Is it any more worn out than "Batman, despite being run ragged from a previous case, must power through to stop ______ before he kills/destroy's the city's _______." It's not what's being done, it's how it's done and Planet Hulk was done well.

People who try to sum up Planet Hulk as being "Just another superhero-in-gladiatorial-combat-in-space story" really are selling the thing short. Most superheroes I can think of (Superman, Thing etc) have at one point in their publication history found themselves in gladiatorial combat off-world... sometimes even with amnesia. Putting your favorite superhero (who usually operates in a modern, urban setting) in such a contest/environment is a nice dramatic challenge for them. It's a fun scenario. In Planet Hulk, Greg Pak creates a planet with a rich set of cultures and backstory. He put extra care into it and it shows.

The Planet Hulk TPBs are very much worthwhile. It's a terrific science fiction story that you don't want to end. Unfortunately the wrap-up is in the vastly inferior World War Hulk.
Anyway, it brought the Hulk back to prominence in the Marvel U and the story and art are real nice. Looking forward to this DVD.
