Here's the post-Crisis reimagining of J'onn J'onnz: A.J. Lieberman wrote: We’re trying to push Martian Manhunter into an emotional place where he’s forced to face his true feelings about the lack of acceptance he’s felt here on earth and the jealousy of Superman, who is also an alien, but benefits from looking human. What do you all think?

He does look like the pinheads in "Freaks." I don't really care about the look so much, it is interesting looking, and he is a shapeshofter, and I think his more alien look was a retcon anyway.
I could see exploring his feelings about lack of acceptance, perhaps, but no, after all his time here, I cannot see a jelousy of Superman. The truth is, the Manhunter spends most of his time looking different from who he is, and if he truly wanted to (and I believe did John Johns right) could look totally human and normal if he wanted.
So I get perhaps the need for a little angst, but lets not be too extreme. and wow, he seems to have really pummelled those guys right? Violence seems to have increased post-Crisis II

I think that AJ Lieberman is a pinhead.
(figures. My 3500th post is about a pinhead.)

Never did understand the logic behind the "true form" era. If that was his true form, why didn't he look like that when the Professor transported him to Earth? He wouldn't have had any reason to shapeshift himself into a more Terran kind of body when he was on Mars, and even if he did ~ even if it was sheer chance that the scientist caught him when he was "humanlike" ~ why wouldn't he change back to his "true" form after the first time he disguised himself as John Jones?

JM Dematteis or Keith Giffen was responsible for that, I think.

Dunno, I'm very old ... to me, J'onn J'onnz was at his coolest when he beat the bad guys with his Martian powers, changed back to John Jones, then winked at the reader as the police chief told him, "Thank goodness the Manhunter showed up, eh Jones?" That's cool. This psychobabbly angsty stuff mixed with pools of blood in every other panel doesn't seem as cool to me. But I'm very old.

Then I must be very old, too. This "new" Manhunter will plummet as fast as Wile E. Coyote down to the canyon floor, with nothing but a little "poof" and a cloud of dust when it hits the bottom.

The cartoon Clark Kent making a bad pun then winking at the camera in the Filmation Superman shorts is just perfect. I miss that. But then, I'm old too.

Heh. I'm almost done with Season 1 of the George Reeves "Adventures of Superman". He was doing a lot of that, "Yes, it is a good thing Superman showed up." Then he'd grin at the camera. He did it before Lynda Carter was showing off her gleaming white teeth.

Most likely. They did try a Martian Manhunter series for a couple of years in the 1960s ~ he took over House Of Mystery for a while, before being bumped to backup status by Robby Reed ~ and it was fairly unsuccessful. He's probably just one of those characters that can't sustain a solo title but works well as part of a cast or as a guest star. Nothing wrong with that.

I've seen retellings where he did have his "true form" when the professor brought him here
Obviously not the original way
Your not old. You're a year younger than my mom (almost two! Jan 30, 1958)
