What good is laying off the booze if you become addicted to Pepsi instead? 99 cans of Diet Pepsi last month! It used to be one can a day to wake up in the morning (I don't like coffee), then it became two and now three! I need to get back to one a day and then ideally only one every other day. I wonder if there are any Colaholics Anonymous groups out there?

Have you gained weight? I started losing weight once I
quit soft drinks cold turkey. If you haven't gained weight
I wouldn't worry about it. However, if you're starting to
pack on the pounds, I'd suggest adding cream and/or
sugar to your coffee and LEARNING to like it.

I used to hate coffee myself, but now I'm a slave to Tuna's
rival Brenda. (Tuna will explain the joke.)

No, I haven't gained weight as they are sugar free. In fact, I've lost weight since I quit alcohol, hardly any paunch now. I'm concerned about tooth corrosion. I know that the dentists advise you to rinse your mouth with water after drinking colas, but I always forget and you lose the taste of the Pepsi that way, sort of an anti-climax to your caffeinated Pepsi charge. I drink them because they taste great and they give me lots of energy. I like Earl Grey and English Breakfast tea, but it doesn't give me the same charge.

I drink that much diet Coke (and have for years) with no effect on my teeth.

Well, I don't know how old you are and it could yet affect your teeth, but in that case maybe I can get away with one can a day. I was also thinking maybe using a straw would help, but then you don't taste the cola as much.

If there's no sugar in diet soda, then what is it that damages the teeth?

I gave up real soda some time ago, but I do have some of the diet stuff sometimes. Should I (and my teeth) be worried?

Appropriately, I drink zero cans of Coke Zero a day.

Carbonic acid. But it's not a big worry without the Sugar.

Heck, they sell new teeth. They don't sell new hearts. (Yet)

Yes, a carbonated diet cola corrodes the teeth just as much as a sugar one. The sugar one of course can also cause cavities, so that one is worse.

But the Coke Zero's help me control the fatty. Good for the heart. I hope to live long enough to lose my teeth anyway.

(My teeth are fine, by the way. I drink 3 or 4 cans a day and never have a cavity).

(Although my teeth naturally resemble Sugar Corn Pops.)

I've just had the one cavity, ever. I was 19.

Must have been all that milk I drank. (And all the sugary cereal I never ate.)

Isn't aspartame supposed to be the worst thing about drinking diet drinks, something about brain tumors and cancer, or is that all just hype? I used to drink a lot if it but it messed with my skin, so now I drink about ten cups of coffee a day instead to keep migraines at bay... or maybe they cause migraines... I don't know, it's all bad for you I think

My ex probably drank more diet Dr. Peppers a month than that! It contributed to kidney problems, according to the doctor. Just because the stuff doesn't have sugar doesn't mean it's harmless. It has all sorts of chemical gunk that can be dangerous in large amounts. Best to use it sparingly if at all.

Bannings: Banned? Moi?
I had a buddy who could drink Dr Pepper 24/7.
No lie, he could, and would, go through several 2 litre bottle a day. Every day.

Then he wondered why the dentist found 18 cavities one year.

I drank a lot of pop in my life, and had about eight cavities. It's not good for you. I have cut down drastically
over the years, but I still like to have three or four a week. When I do buy a case of pop these days, I buy
Diet Rite Red Raspberry made with Sucralose. Sucralose is manufactured by the selective chlorination of
table sugar, in which three of the hydroxyl groups are replaced with chlorine atoms (the end result being 600
times sweeter than sugar). Sucralose mixed with (corn) maltodextrin or dextrose as bulking agents is sold
as Splenda™.

I drink sodas only once in a while. When I was a kid I drank them more often, though not constantly. As a poor grad student I couldn't afford to drink them that often and largely lost my taste for them. It's probably just as well. When I do drink them it's usually a Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew or a supposedly fruit-flavored soda. Don't like colas much at all. My last carbonated beverage was some lightly fizzy black cherry juice I found at a health-food store. It tasted better than any soda!

Thanks for warning me. I think at first I'll set myself a realistic goal of one a day, it's only a 33 cl can.

BTW fruit juices are also acidic, not good either. In fact I think I was told by a dentist that orange juice could be worse than cola. Vegetable juices are alright.

I buy Grapefruit juice, but I water it down by about three times over.
Just the hint of juice is refreshing.

I've cut down on fast food, too, but if I do order something through I drive through,
I almost always order iced tea.

I drink peach flavoured ice tea from cartons, though I don't think there's much tea in it. I get my sugar kick that way.
