I am getting one of these as a gift.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0047Q9GT4/?tag=imwan-20

I would love to use these for my cbr comics I have scanned, among other things (light email etc.) and I have some questions:

1) What do I need to get the cbrs on it?
2) What program do I need to view the cbrs?
3) Do I need to hack it and if so how?
4) Is it upgradeable and if so, how?

Thanks

The USB Data cable, or a wi-fi connection to a network share. I use a program called ES File Explorer to copy stuff over wi-fi from my desktop to my phone.

2) What program do I need to view the cbrs?

There are many. Perfect Viewer is the one I tried. search the Android Market for CBR.

3) Do I need to hack it and if so how?

Not to read CBRs, no.

You can upgrade the internal storage from 4GB to 16GB with a MicroSD card. Probably cost $50.

I'd be surprised if Coby ever released an OS upgrade for it, though. Android 2.1's an OK version, in any case.

Is it just copy paste via USB?

What about for any other reasons?

Is it hard to do so? What about memory increase?

Can you install any android or other os on it?

Yes.

Not for any "normal" day to day stuff, no. There are reasons to root some Android devices that open up features that may be locked by carriers, say, or to install apps to the SD card (pre 2.2, so that may apply in this case).

Not hard at all. You just plug it in. Have to copy all data off the old one first if you've been using it, of course. I'd just buy one ahead of time and install it before you do anything. Memory is what it is and can't be upgraded.

You may be able to install a newer Android version on it (by rooting the device and using a hacked mod - not as scary a proposition as it sounds, because this is very, very common in the Android scene). Not really worth the time and effort to do so if it's already 2.1 though, IMO.

Allen,

When you get this working for comics, please post some photos.

Hey, I'd love to read a review of your experiences with the Android tablet (not just the comic stuff). It's on my radar.

Watch for the Samsung Galaxy S to hit rock bottom prices. When the new Samsung 10.1 comes out, the Galaxy S will be no longer hip (not Honeycomb) so there should be some smoking deals on it.

Jay, is there serious cloud stuff in Android? Not lip service to the cloud, but meaningful and genuinely helpful cloud stuff?

I use the following programs/services where my items are in the cloud:

Gmail and Google Calendar (duh, obvious)
Google docs (word documents and spreadsheets, powerpoint, PDF's and uploads) -- this is really helpful and it's the only software I use for my private life for documents.
Kindle for Android (syncs with my Amazon collection in the cloud, and even checks for furthest page read on other devices).
Google Voice -- my voicemails and text messages
Evernote -- all my notes, etc. (including snapshots and audio recorded notes) are synced to the cloud.
Google Reader -- all my RSS feeds, etc. are updated to the central service (the status of which ones are starred and read, etc. are synced to the cloud, no matter where I'm reading them).
Chrome throws all my bookmarks, settings, apps, etc. into the cloud for backup, and syncs across all locations. Honeycomb has Chrome functionality, I believe. The Android browsers aren't syncing with Chrome yet.
Obviously, all the photo hosting like Picasa and Photobucket -- these all work seamlessly with Android. I take pictures with my phone and they can go (if I say so) to a drop box in the cloud.

(I'll omit social media like Twitter and Facebook).

The new could service for music by Google is coming, I think it's in beta and Jeff is trying -- you can upload your songs to the Google servers and play it anywhere.
Playon now has Netflix and Hulu (and many other things) and an Android Client. I don't use it -- I tend not to care about anything that involves watching TV on a device. I'd rather read.

Will do. I've played with an Android phone a couple of years ago and wasn't too impressed but I'll let you know what I think of this tablet. Should get it tomorrow.

I forgot one more -- my audiobooks on Audible.com. Every audio book I've ever bought ( and it's quite a few) is sitting on there server, and can be pulled into my android phone on demand.

They prefer the term "Artificial Person" thankyewverymuch! Just make sure you get one with the new "Behaviorial Inhibitors".

Is there a reason (or is it easy) to hack it to install the latest Android?

A couple of years ago means Android 1.5, 1.6. It's really 2.0 and beyond where Google has hit it right.

No, 2.1 (which this has) enabled multitouch support, which would be the most important feature for a tablet.

2.2 added 3G USB & Wi-Fi-tethering, but tyour tablet is wi-fi only to begin with so that doesn't matter. 2.3 is a mostly cosmetic release if the device doesn't support near-field-communication, which it doesn't.

So leave it as-is. No need for root.

I got the tablet and it was actually something called a Flytouch 256m with I believe a 7 inch screen. Anyone know where I can get more info on it or updates for it?

And under settings it says the following:
Firmware version 1.9.1.v01

Kernel Version

2.6.29-00236-g4f8dbbb-dirty

Here's the subforum for that device at the Android Forums I frequent.

This forum is a little more technical with root advice.

http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?/fo ... ouch-epad/

It looks like it's an eclair (1.x) device that hasn't really made it to Froyo (2.x) I see all sorts of trouble with them getting it rooted and running.

I've never heard of it.

So no main site or updates etc. Already seems more complicated.
