Smart move by HP (whose new CEO has impressed me a great deal) or not?

It would have been smart maybe 10 years ago.

I think the price is way too high but with the proper marketing, it could work. Not sure that HP is the right fit.

Nah, you grab Palm right after they acquire Handspring, and you've got the Treo. Then you don't need to waste all that time developing iPaqs that no one will buy.

However, you would need to sell it off right before the iPhone is announced, in order to maximize the gain.

Bought to absorb some technology and dismantled, is my bet. Is HP in the smartphone market at all now? If not, this is what they will do to get their foot in the door.

Makes sense as a bridge to tablets, maybe. No one else was eager to buy up Palm.
Maybe they got it at bargain prices? Maybe they wanted a few patents and employees?
All of the above?

If they could get a decent tablet going and make the Palm name relevant again, then bring it back to phones.

Meanwhile, HP should buy Radio Shack.
