Contrary to its appearance, most of Stark's armors are not rigid metal suits, like a medieval knight's. His standard armor suit consists of approximately two million grain-of-sand-sized discrete units, which are shaped to have as large a surface as possible to optimize their effectiveness. The basis of the suit's structural integrity is the powerful force field which permeates the armor's "cells," as well as the whole configuration when active. Each of the "cells" is a tiny unit in its own right, contributing energy and computing power to the entire armor; this is also why the suit can remain functional even after having sustained considerable damage. The basic principle of the suit is holistic; each part contains the whole, as it were. When inactive, the entire suit can collapse on the microscopic level, the cells "folding" in on themselves to take up a smaller volume, like a three-dimensional accordion pleat.

While Tony Stark designs every aspect of the armor, the complexity of the design requires that production be entirely automated. Each cell is constructed by using specialized bacteria — the bacteria consume minute amounts of specific metals, arrange themselves on pre-tagged areas on the "chip wafer," then die, leaving a very small amount of iron, or gold, or gallium-arsenide. This method allows great precision in determining the thickness of circuitry.

All the details of the armor's construction listed above are laid out in the Iron Manual. However, some armor which appeared after publication of the Iron Manual may well use entirely different methods of construction.

I did not know that.

If you had Bill Gate's money (for example) wouldn't you be trying to have some version of this built?

If I had Bill Gate's money—Bill would be pretty pissed about it.
It's hard to say what I would do with that much money.
I'd like to try, though.

All you need is Ditko's cheat sheet, where he spelled it out for us:

Yeah, I always remembered that the suit was like cloth until activated then it was basically a strong forcefield that moved with him. The red and gold looks cool, but the original grey suit will always be my favorite, for 2 reasons:

1) it looks like iron
2) it gives me hope that someday someone will create something similar in the real world. Like Ned Kelly, but high Tech.

Where is John Byrne's rejection of Iron Man, who kills innocent bacteria in the same way MythBusters killed innocent bees? IT MUST HAPPEN!

Strange seeing those words in that order.

Usually it's 'rejection of John Byrne'

BTW, did Ditko select the color scheme as well or did Stan order a more colorful, superhero-ish costume?

I don't know. I don't know how that kind of stuff gets done with colors anyway.

I'm asking because I'm curious how much credit Ditko deserves; most of the elements of that costume are from Kirby's original design anyway. Things like the lines on the chestplate and the triangular "ears" were abandoned in the next redesign.

Elements that are introduced in the alleged "Ditko" verision:

Gauntlet gloves with raised band marking off glove
Boots with raised band and smaller foot
Lines on red portions to show collapsible and flexible
Widow's peak effect above faceplate
Moveable, separate faceplate
Red and yellow
Edited to add: Yellow portions skin tight to show manly curves

Elements from "Kirby's original design" (as first published by Don Heck):

Metal simulation of human body
Circles on chest.

Mystery element, known only to Hanzo:

"Triangular ears."

You're forgetting the most iconic element of Iron Man's armor-- the helmet design with the black slit eyes and mouth. Combined with the chest "logo", it makes up most of the appeal.

Kirby designed the armor, right? Why are you putting that in quotes?

I don't think any drawings of it survive (but I don't know). I just put it in quotes to encompass whatever you meant by that phrase. For all I know, you've got Kirby as a guiding force overseeing everything, including tweaks that were made along the way.

See that's just it -- with Kirby, one drop of Kirby and he gets the credit. With Ditko, he does the red and gold and it's "Hmmm. I wonder if Stan really came up with that?"

Iron Man is not one of the things I give much credit to Kirby for. There are plenty of things that Kirby is responsible for, but the connection to Iron Man is the weakest, consisting of "design of character that looked heinous and would have never been popular." (Iron Man is also not something that Ditko deserves much credit for -- he's one of the keys, along with Daredevil, that makes me firmly in the Stan Lee camp).

I may be way off, but I thought Kirby did the original cover and that's what Heck based the suit off of.

I personally consider core elements that look iconic and original to be the most difficult thing to create. For example, I think Batman Beyond has a very cool costume, but I wouldn't totally credit Bruce Timm with it-- the elements of the logo, white eyes, and "bat ears" were all created by Kane and Finger. Without those core elements, you don't have a solid foundation to base a design on.

YMMV.

Ditko's design was my second favorite Iron Man armor. I like the pointed mask.
