Nope, I'm not referring to any booty but a new independent sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell...and Sam Rockwell.

Yeah, it's very good. It'll remind you of 2001 and Silent Running at times, but it'll keep you guessing for a while. Sam Rockwell is excellent, and Kevin Spacey is a blast as the voice of the computer/robot. Quite a promising first feature from Duncan Jones (who is David Bowie's son, BTW).

I peeked at spoilers at the iMDB message board, but even if I didn't, I would have guessed where this was going. It's a very moving film, and although Sam Rockwell deserves a great deal of credit playing two characters, Kevin Spacey does a good job as the voice of GERTY. His voice barely shows an emotion, and you can only tell how the robot is feeling through the smiley face emoticon that shows on it's TV screen. Surprisingly, it works. While GERTY never becomes human, I have to say that the robot is much more sympathetic than 2001's HAL.

You might notice that the four giant "Harvester" machines are named after the four evangelists of the Gospels. (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.) I think that's a joke on the part of Lunar Industries when you consider that... ...like Jesus, each Sam Bell clone has a mission lasting three years. Like Jesus, each Sam Bell clone dies after three years. And like Jesus, after they die, each clone is "resurrected" when a new clone is awakened by GERTY.

I'm not reading or watching anything here because I believe that eventually a spoiler will birth from the non-spoiler hints and phrases used throughout the thread.

Yeah, I'm the same way, I know only a few details and that it is really well done - so I'm gonna skip reviews and such until I get a chance to see it.

Although I knew the "spoiler" going in, I figured it out soon enough---and so did the characters on-screen. If you really are anxious to see this movie before spoilers are revealed, you should do so quickly because this isn't the type of film that stays in theatres very long. (I'll be surprised if Moon is still at the Bethesda Landmark Cinema next week!)

How are things going? Bowie: Just fine. It's good to see you! Duncan: Anyway, I just wanted to ask you something... Bowie: Go ahead! Duncan: I'm making an independent sci-fi film in England, and I was wondering if I could call it Space Oddity. Bowie: No. Duncan: How about Major Tom? Bowie: Still no. Duncan: Can I at least use the song on the soundtrack? Bowie: Good-bye!

We need more SF films like Moon.
It would suit me quite nicely if more genre films like Moon were made. But they aren't.
And so I post to the Internet saying I wish I wish I wish, to no avail.
After Up, Moon was my movie of 2009.

Moon was really well done even if it was fairly predictable. I think it was all in the pacing and that relentless, maddening background music. That and some good acting didn't hurt either. Directed by David Bowie's kid, right?

I was interested in this film as well. I'll have to make it a priority once I get some more free time.

Yeah, the story itself, you knew where it was going as soon as that twist occurred early in the film, but that was fine. There was still the question of how it would get there, and the overall look and feel of the movie was just great. I really appreciated how they managed to create something so gripping with minimal sets and special effects, and liked how the movie grappled with moral issues without being too heavy-handed or offering the viewer answers. Director Duncan Jones is indeed Bowie's son. I really want to watch this again soon. I'm curious how it will stand up to repeated viewings. Maybe it will become a very quite classic of the genre, like Gattaca.

I have it on, er, disc and have watched it two or three times. It holds up pretty well I think. I like the creepy calm robot. It evoked shades of HAL, but in the complete opposite direction. It actually wanted to help the guy and felt bad for him.
Gattaca is also great. Almost bought it for six bucks when I was at the store the other day. My old copy is all fucked up, but I was in a rush and have been buying too many movies lately.
