I don't know if there's a modern-day counterpart to the Billy Jack movies. They tied in to the hippy peace movement that was fading and the martial arts craze that was just gaining steam. You always had the "man of peace who is pushed too far" type of heroes, but I think this was one of the first to reflect that specific era. I think the Kung Fu TV series owes a bit to the first couple of Billy Jack movies (besides Bruce Lee).
