Starman- Several new series spun out of 1994's Zero Hour event, but only one was a success. With Starman, James Robinson and Tony Harris created a hero with a definite journey, who reluctantly took up the mantle of his legendary father only because of a deadly assault on his family and city. Critical and commercial success followed, with it becoming one of the first DC series to be collected in TPBs while it was still ongoing. The series ended only because Robinson had a definite ending planned from the beginning, and when it was all over, most readers went back to the first issue and started all over again. Attachment: match27.jpg Birds of Prey- Comics with female leads have usually had a hard time finding readers, but in the 1990s Chuck Dixon and DC took up the challenge. They tested the water with a couple of one-shots and a mini-series, teaming former Batgirl Barbara Gordon with the Black Canary, taking a more pro-active stance against the world's super-criminals. With its connection to the Bat-books, the book proved incredibly popular, running for over ten years. Its success indirectly led to Black Canary and Power Girl becoming the leaders of the JLA and JSA, respectively, effectively shattering any "glass ceiling" that existed amongst the DC heroes. I Smell another blowout. BoP gave a much needed spotlight to Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance and Dixon does fast paced street level action better than almost anyone... but Starman is truly one of a kind - or at least a first in the big two. DC gave Robinson the freedom to tell his story from beginning to end - and that's the key thing: They allowed the story to end, aside from acouple of appearances to launch JSA, DC has let Jack Knight actually retire and has kept him out of their stories. One great arc after another, each one building upon each other and further defining Opal and its residents, plus a succession of amazing artists gets Starman my easy vote.

Starman, for all of the reasons Ross listed, as well as in the development of Jack Knight, who started as a bit of a cliche, but became one of the best-developed characters in comics.

Starman. Besides just not being as good, Birds of Prey went on too long and jumped the shark. Starman told its story and went out strong.

Birds of Prey woulf beat a ton of other choices on this list. And Jeff it didn't jump the shark until Dixon left. It showed how strong his characterizations are. But man this is Starman. I may throw Birds a sympathy vote, but man.. Your killing me with these matches Kevin.

I've not read either of these, so in my head, I'm still voting for Infinity Inc.

Okay - Birds of Prey. Mostly because I haven't read it and I love Rick Veitch's stuff aside from Swamp Thing.

Starman wins in a squeaker. (I thought Sandman losing would have taught y'all to never assume!)
