Update: Gah. Such as it is with rumors, it seems there was a bit of mixup. But Guillermo Del Toro clarifies his position on "Heaven Sent" on his own forums: "Wow- please contact whoever said I denied it. I cannot recall ever answering a question like that. Sadly I dont do tweeter. I denied being involved in JLA but ['Heaven Sent'] I would love to do!!!"

As we said in our report yesterday, this didn't really make much sense. But it was a juicy rumor, and conceivably something Guillermo Del Toro would be interested in doing. But alas, it turned out to be dead wrong.

Originally reported by Latino Review, their story went something like this: Warner Bros. were so happy with "Pacific Rim" they were throwing projects left and right at Del Toro. But the filmmaker decided he wanted to do a comic book team-up movie with the second tier DC Comics characters Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Constantine Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, Zatara, and Sargon in a movie called "Heaven Sent." And if it seemed too good to be true, well it is.

Pietro Filipponi of The Daily Blam tweeted this morning: "Asked Guillermo Del Toro about the rumor he'll be directing a supernatural superhero movie for DC/WB, he said there is no truth to it at all." So there you go.

It seemed a bit odd that WB would already be gearing up a team-up movie of B-characters, when "Justice League" has barely been started, and moreover, when the studio has been incredibly choosy when it comes to tentpoles, particularly those with international or broad appeal (which this seemed to have none). Anyway, nothing to see here, you can move along...

Back in November there were reports that Guillermo Del Toro was in some way involved in developing a movie around some of DC Comics' darker and more esoteric characters (Swamp Thing, John Constantine, etc). Proof that a game is afoot comes this morning, with Del Toro confirming to IGN that the project, formerly referred to as Heaven Sent, is now tentatively called Dark Universe, and that a writer - as yet unrevealed - is almost attached.

"I'm working on it," says Del Toro. "I'm writing the outline, and we're in talks with a very, very good writer. He accepted, and people are going to be happy with who we've chosen. I've been courting him and I think he's the perfect guy for this job."

Dark Universe, it seems clear, is somewhat akin to DC's Justice League Dark, a recent series teaming DC heroes who are supernatural rather than traditionally super: part of DC's push to de-clutter its decks and fold its Vertigo-type characters into its main "universe". Del Toro hints to IGN that his roster for the film will cover Hellblazer's John Constantine, slinky magician Zatanna and her father Zatara, Swamp Thing, Deadman, The Demon and The Spectre.

Fielding a fan question at today's WonderCon panel for his upcoming Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro offered a few details about his in-development DC Universe project, Dark Universe (He also hinted that it may ultimately be called Justice League Dark).

Del Toro has written a story bible for the film and they have a writer to adapt the screenplay that they hope to announce very shortly. The project won't happen, however, until after Del Toro's next, the horror story Crimson Peak.

The film will follow John Constantine (who, Del Toro promises, will be blond this time) as its protagonist, and will include the previously-announced Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre and Zatanna as well.

"He is basically trying to recruit," says Del Toro of the "Hellblazer" hero.

Though the film's through-line will feature Jason Blood's history with Merlin and the Knights of King Arthur, bringing a threat to present day.

Del Toro stressed that he didn't want any of the heroes' origins to be delivered up front and, instead, will be explored throughout the film.

"Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is," says Del Toro, "but Deadman is still trying to find out who shot him."

When Dark Universe ultimately heads to the screen is still anyone's guess, but fans can catch Del Toro's Pacific Rim in theaters July 12.

While Pacific Rim opens on Friday, Guillermo del Toro has revealed that his take on DC's Dark Universe will fit into the Man of Steel universe.

Speaking to MTV, del Toro explained "I think that the great thing about the Dark Universe is that you have this possibility of basically creating this supernatural group, and you can play with different worlds, but I would love to see the DC Universe become as cohesive as the Marvel Universe.

So if there is any correlation I will honour it.

I'm writing it right now, I'm rewriting the outline. We have a writer that we're waiting for, so I said to Warners I will rewrite the outline in the meantime."

I know I've been slow on the uptake today, but this is getting strange.

"Posts will live, posts will die, and nothing will ever be the same!"

I have never wanted anything in life as badly as I wanted this to be real.

Guillermo del Toro Says Justice League Dark and the John Constantine TV Show Can Coexist

Guillermo del Toro has been talking about his planned Dark Universe (a.k.a. Justice League Dark) movie for about a year now, a team-up of many of the supernatural characters from DC Comics including John Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Spectre, and others. But with the recent announcement that a Constantine TV series is now in the works from Dark Knight and Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer, the status of del Toro’s film has been in question.

Well, I spoke to GDT last week and he claims that Dark Universe is still in the works despite the John Constantine TV show that’s being developed for NBC.

“We talked about it at DC and Warners, and I feel confident that the two properties can exist at the same time,” he said. “I think that DC is trying to create a great universe of characters, and expand it and make it clear to the audience that it’s a landscape of characters, and not just one that’s dependent on one or two characters.”

Can John Constantine exist on TV and in the movies at the same time?

Indeed, DC and Warners are on a tear lately, having recently set a Commissioner Gordon series in motion at FOX as well as a potential Arrow spin-off featuring the Flash on The CW. So who says a John Constantine TV show can’t co-exist with a movie?

That said, del Toro’s Dark Universe doesn’t seem to be moving that quickly. The filmmaker told me that they’re still writing the film but there is not a full script yet. “But it’s still active,” he said.

If I had to pick one superhero movie to see out of the current crop of titles that are in development, it would have to be GDT’s take on the supernatural and magical side of the DC Universe. He’s perfect for it.

ROLL CALL: 13 "DARK" DC CHARACTERS FOR DEL TORO'S "JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK"

A "Justice League" movie was confirmed to be in development at Warner Bros. in late April, following years of speculation and rumor, not to mention a general sense that such a thing was probably inevitable after the massive success of Marvel's "Avengers" film.

Another Justice League team -- "Justice League Dark," focusing on the supernatural superheroes of DC Comics -- has also been in development at Warner Bros., with "Hellboy" and "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro attached since 2012. It's been a while since the last update on the long-percolating film, but as of last November, it was still in the works according to del Toro, and intended to be part of a shared live-action DC Universe.

If the DC film franchise grows into the Marvel Studios-type success Warner Bros. clearly hopes it will -- just look at the title for 2016's "Man of Steel" follow-up "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and the multiple superheroes set to in the film -- "Justice League Dark" might become a reality sooner rather than later. But which heroes might play a part in the film? Here are 13 educated guesses.

Warner Bros is deep into the process of developing their other DC Comic book properties that aren't going to feature Ben Affleck's Batman showing up in a supporting role. The last time we heard about "Justice League Dark" (AKA "Dark Universe"), Guillermo Del Toro had left the project. However, Warner Bros was excited enough about his script--not to mention the way the anti-hero team-up entry "Suicide Squad" is being received--to make it a priority. Scott Rudin reportedly boarded the project as a producer to get it in shape to shoot sometime next year.

The Del Toro version of the team, according to the man himself, is Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan The Demon. It's possible that the movie might add in a Cara Delevingne cameo as Enchantress if they want to bring the film closer to the the "Justice League" and "Batman v Superman" universe and DC's "New 52" version of the team included Madame Xanadu. The lead characters aren't cast, though we've heard Warner Bros is close on a few of the roles.

Guillermo Del Toro wanted Ron Perlman to play Swamp Thing and thus far everyone seems to agree that's still a good idea. The studio disagreed with Del Toro's choice to play John Constantine and is seeking A-List talent. Right now the frontrunner for the part looks like Colin Farrell, who is currently shooting "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" with the studio. However, Ewan McGregor has also been approached for the same part. It's possible that the one that doesn't get the role of John Constantine could fall back to Jason Blood, the human side of Etrigan.

For Deadman, Warner Bros is looking for a comedic presence and for Zatanna, they're still searching for hispanic/black actress to fill the role. Right now Monica Belluci looks like the top choice to play magic user Madame Xanadu. The film still doesn't have a director, officially, though the process of making offers and getting pitches is probably well underway if Warner Bros wants it in production as soon as possible. I have tried to reach Farrell's rep but they have no comment at this time.
