DD 113: Consistently brilliant stories by Brubaker..but let me take a moment to rave about the art...Lark is getting better every month..which is saying something...the fight scenes..the little details..the facial expressions...the realism...amazing stuff..and what an ending..did not see that character coming...plus hints that more martial arts characters will be appearing what seems to be a kung fu battle royale...10/10

Cap 44: fast paced and fun as Cap and the Widow track down Batroc who is taking down a UN convoi...cool stuff and the flashbacks have me intrigued as well...9/10

JSA Kingdom: Nice to see a focus on Sand and some other characters that have been put to the side (with this huge cast its hard to focus on everyone) as the story progresses and we get some cool character beats...JSA would indeed be better with some oversized issues every year to focus on the cast that dont always get the spotlight..plus a cool Eart 2 JSI poster by Ordway!...9/10

Superman 682: the plot escalates as the Kryptonians get more militant...really digging this storyline a lot..Rbinosn does a fantastic job with the evre growing supporting cast as well (i want to know more about the Science Police chief lady now...Robinson is a master at tantalising us with clues of backstories and secrets)...8/10

Batman 681: Unevent art (some great panels and some horrible ones)...and the story does not really answer all the questions......definetly needs a rereading (the entire arc that is)...but was expecting more of a payoff...6/10

JSA KINGDOM COME SPECIAL MAGOG #1 -- Whatever. 6/10

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #578 -- Marcos Martin is, without a doubt, one of my favourite current artists, one of my favourite Spidey artists (behind Ditko, Romita and Romita Jr), and the artist I most want to be when I grow up. Waid was solid in the writing department. My fav BND issue yet? 10/10

FANTASTIC FOUR #561 -- Well, that ended quickly. Not bad. Didn't rock my socks. 7/10

UNCANNY X-MEN #504 -- I can admit that Brubaker did not shine during his Uncanny run. Fraction was tighter here, but, I don't know, the X-Men are so stale I'm not sure anyone can work 'em for me. Art by the Dodsons is okay, MUCH better than the Greg Land crappola. This book is almost dropped. 6/10

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #19 -- I'll need to go back and read it all, but weak arc. I was looking forward to the Fray stuff, but in retrospect it didn't work. Next issue's look at animated Buffy (Jeph Loeb writing) should be fun. 6/10

JSA KINGDOM COME SPECIAL THE KINGDOM #1 -- This I liked! Finally a pay-off to the drawn out Kingdom arc. Great character stuff. The Atom Smasher/Damage conversation pages were my favourite. Vanity Smurf? LOL! 9/10

CAPTAIN AMERICA #44 -- I was drifting when I tried to read this. Gotta say, it was only struck me as so-so. Lacks the operatic, high tension gravitas of the previous arc. Clearly the gears have shifted lower (had to happen), but I'm not as in to it. Maybe on a second read. Still, not bad. 8/10

You're spot-on re: JSA. I think the sheer number of characters in the book has hindered better story-telling and character development. Having more opportunities (i.e. books) to feature the characters has been a bonus. I think I would like a leaner, meaner JSA. I'm looking forward to getting past the Kingdom arc. Its been going on for ages!

Look at the language Brubaker snuck into this issue of Captain America by having Batroc say it in French:

Noticed that. Made me smile. I like Batroc. I like foreign-language profanity.

Cranky - yeah Lark is just amazing...DD is one of my favorite books out there now.

Now I've finished the JSA Kingdom Come Special. I'll let this play out into something surprising (hopefully) but I gotta tell you -- at this point in the storyline, I'm almost rooting for Gog.

Lots of people have been complaining about the length of this arc (not you Linda) - i for one like this extended storyline...it kinda fits the epic scope of the JSA and the massive cast...(JLA should be like this..and it hasent in ages)...some characters get lost in the shuffle but overall im digging it.

I'm just waiting for the Gog storyline to end so I can exit from JSA, and close the door on monthly comics.
It's been neat, but it's been dragged on far too long.

I'm fine with the length of it (so many characters who need airtime, like you said) but I hope it turns out differently than Would love to see Geoff work out a fresh solution.

P.S. It's fun to say "Gog". Try it!

yeah I hear ya...mind you Gog's (it is fun to say it!) gifts and blessings seem to be double edged swords..so we'll see how it resolves...after that Im eager to see the Black Adam story that follows this arc...Johns has done great work on Black Adam as a character.

Not as fun as "Magog"! It's like Gog's mother. Ma Gog. We need a Pa Gog. If he has a Kryptonian relative, perhaps Gog-El. He has the power of a search engine.

DMZ #36 (the conclusion to the two-issue arc) was good but seriously compressed. No, not decompressed. COMPRESSED. It read a bit weird. I may or may not be back next issue. 7/10

Daredevil #113 was incredibly strong again this month. Great storyline, great book. 10/10

Runaways #4 was solidly decent. Ramos' art was okay and while Moore's plot re: the spell was a bit stretchy, it all worked nicely together. 8/10

Unknown Soldier #2 was strong, effective, brave and sadly realistic. This book has balls. I read a review that pointed out to me that there is a "Grendel Spirit" angle to this book and its true. Very good read. Not sure where it will go beyond this arc, but I'm intrigued. 9/10

Beyondn it's obvious quality in writing and art, I'm intrigued by this guy. He's a doctor who thinks of himself as peaceful, but he's apparently got a killer side. Kind of a Logan, Jason Bourne thing that makes it interesting.

The original Unknown Soldier was disfigured, but appeared in each story in disguise. I wonder if this character is going to do disguises, or is that device totally discarded?

I hope that's not the end, either. A few years ago, I would have had complete faith in Johns to wrap it up in an exciting and original fashion. Nowadays, though, I have many doubts.

I don't have a problem with the length of the story, either. It did get somewhat sidetracked with Power Girl's story, plus I was somewhat disappointed with the revelation that this Earth-2
