A friend of mine had horses in high school and we used to ride them all the time.
One New Years Eve, his parents were out of town and three of us wound up at his house, drunk off our asses. One buddy jumped in his pool - it was that kind of night. We woke up the next morning and one of the horses was dead in the pasture. Legs stiff and sticking straight out - the whole deal. Somebody saw it, called his house, and woke us up. When we saw it, we all had a brief look at each other like, "did we kill this horse last night?" But she was the oldest horse so it wasn't anything we did. Probably.
I had two ponies when I was in elementary school, one Shetland and one Welsh, both named Ginger.
The Shetland was first and when I was in the third grade my best friend and I would ride all summer and play cowboys. We took a break and went to his house and, pretending that we were in a saloon, drank some of his parents' wine. His mother came home and found us passed out in the living room.
I did not own horses, but the place I spent many a weekend growing up had horses. I learned how to ride and care for them. Haven't ridden in years but I'd do it anytime if the opportunity came up despite having acquired a ferocious allergy to the creatures.

My neighbors had a horse and ponies boarding at a nearby farm when I was growing up. I spent a lot of time there with them and got to take care of one of the ponies, Diamond, for the better part of a year.
They don't really turn horses into glue and cat food anymore -- well, not canned cat food, though they do feed horse meat to big cats at zoos. Most of the horses currently being slaughtered are sold for upscale human dining in Europe and Asia. (The sad thing is, the slaughter process is particularly inhumane when it comes to horses.)
Mom has longed her entire life to own a horse, but our family never has.
I've never had any real interest in them. The horse-loving gene has passed on to my middle neice instead. I rode one once at a dude ranch while visiting family out in New Mexico and didn't particularly enjoy the experience. I'd rather ride iron horses instead. I do ride shanks' mare for several miles each day.
