I see that Andy Capp was also published in mass market paperbacks in the States. What do you think of this loafer?

Used to read him maybe 30 years ago in the Sunday paper comic section. It was more because it was there than me having enjoyed it. I may have gotten a chuckle or two, but I really can't recall having done so. Seems like it revolved around Andy staying out too long at the pub, drinking too much, and coming home to an angry wife, and then sleeping on the couch. It was readily apparent (if not shown outright) that domestic violence occurred often.
So, ha ha ha ha, I guess.

First of all it was Andy who got a beating from his wife Flo for always coming home late and drunk. Not that that in itself excuses domestic violence even if committed by a wronged wife, but it was the basic premise and running gag like so much other violence in humor strips and cartoons going all the way back to the Katzenjammer Kids. There is a long tradition for this sort of thing, but maybe it's anachronistic in these politically correct times.

I used to read Andy Capp, thought it was funny, then met Wanker and realized that the strip had been a biography the whole time.

I read it throughout most of my childhood. It was carried in my local paper on weekdays and Sundays.
It was not a favorite of mine. Clearly humor for adults.

Andy was a weakling and Flo a pretty strong woman, so they'd sometimes get into fights with no clear winner.

It's a misremembered Simpsons quote. Homer saw an Andy Capp comic strip and said something that ended in "... wife-beating alcoholic".

"Oh, Andy Capp, you wife-beating drunk!"... that's the Homer quote.

He even has his own statue outside of a pub in his creator's hometown.

I haven't read him in years. I liked it for a long time though.

I was in a convenience store a couple weeks ago, and they had some Andy Capp brand licensed snack food.

Yeah, Andy Capp is still a brand of "Hot Fries." A chip-like, fry-like product.
