Seeing the Kaptain Kanada thread made me think about how every time I see "Gaurdian", I always end up thinking of the good captain.

I discovered Captain Canuck on the comic rack in a local bookstore on Long Island when I was oh...13 or so I guess. I had never seen it before as I don't believe it was distributed outside of Canada very much. I picked it up and instantly fell in love with the art by George Freeman, and the amazing colors, which at a time long before digital coloring was unheard of in a mainstream comic.

This is the issue I picked up that day:

Here's a couple of examples of gorgeous George Freeman art, and the coloring process that was way ahead of its time:

Anyway, I immediately fell in love with this book, and I subscribed right away, as I knew finding this gem on a rack in New York had been a fluke. About 6 weeks later I got a manilla envelope in the mail. Inside it were 4 back issues, a few stickers, and a letter telling me that the CKR comics had gone bankrupt and would no longer be publishing Captain Canuck, or any other comic for that matter. I was crushed. I ended up collecting all the issues at different conventions, and through some mail order, but that was that.

The creator of Captain Canuck has tried to resurrect the good Captain several times over the years with no success, but I will always have a fond spot for those old issues, and for the amazing art of George Freeman, who has done some spotty work here and there over the years. I always thought that the guy should have become much bigger than he ever did.

So anyhow, are there any other Captain Canuck fans out there?

I had an issue or two in the 80's and tried to keep up with the series a few years ago ... but it was a different guy in the Cap uniform and the story wasn't spectacular.

In one of the lettercols ( remember them? ) the readers were complaining that they'd given Captain Canuck powers ... super-strength, I think ... and the bulk of them thought that was a cop-out. They seemed to like the fact that the guy was just a gutsy, tough human.

I'd love to see another run on the Captain. But only if it's a continuation of his original series. Never cared much for any of the later stuff.
And, hey! Whatever became of Johnny Canuck? Are the rights to him in the public domain?

Captain Canuck started showing up on Minnesota comic racks starting with issue #9.
I then bout #10-14 and the Summer Special. A couple of years ago, I managed to get
issue #1 for a reasonable price—just to relive a bit of my childhood. Once I looked
through it, I wished I had purchased #2-8 as well.

Since I didn't buy the other ones the comic shop had, and since he no longer had the
first issue, the shop owner decided to dump the rest of them into his 50¢ or 3 for $1
bargain bin. I missed him doing that—and would have bought them all—but was only
able to find issue #3 when I got there.

It was kind of odd to find it on a rack in Arkansas as well.

Some years back I found several back issues. I don't think I still have them. There was a storyline that drew a parallel between humans fighting off an alien invasion in modern times and the natives seeing off the Vikings in the eleventh century.

I had a number of these issues. Freeman's art was very cool and they did things with coloring that Marvel and DC did not.

I mentioned in a recent email to one who will remain nameless that it is time i start rebuilding my Captain Canuck collection. Fun stuff, and as has been mentioned the art was ahead of its time!
