That's a darn good question. I went with Matte,because of what certain people told me. In the store I preferred Glossy,but I am now glad I went with matte(I'm not the type of guy who cleans his screen every day). I am surprised how strongly people feel about each format. They usually like one and despise the other.

Matte, I hate the reflections I get on gloss.

When painting figures, Matte.
If they are wearing cloth, the final paint job should look like cloth. Same with skin.
If they are wearing some sort of armor, latex, or plastic shoulderpads or what have you, then use gloss ONLY ON THOSE PARTS!
I've seen some really crappy customizations because Super Dude and Wonder Chick were painted with shiny gloss paint, and they looked horrible.
Cars, boats, space rockets, Gloss, for a high sheen.
Big stuff like battleships, federation starships, and such, Matte.
