If you did not have a surge protector or battery back-up between your computer and the outlet there is a very real possibility that your computer is fried. Try it in a different outlet. See if there is a reset button somewhere. Pray. It may have to go to the computer doctor for a proper diagnosis.

And, putting your hard drive (only!) in the freezer is a last resort way to possibly reclaim data on a dying drive. But, don't do that.

Probably just the power supply, which is easily replaced, often for less than $50. If, however, the surge got past the fuse inside the PS, then your system may indeed be toast. The bright side is that this sort of thing almost never damages the hard drive so you likely won't lose any data, just money to fix/replace. :(

I'm with Jeff. Most likely it's just a fried power supply.

When replacing a power supply, it's never a bad idea to get one with higher wattage especially if you have added any upgrades to the computer such as video and sound cards which are more of a power draw.

Also, spend 20 or 30 bucks on a surge protector with a lifetime equipment warranty.

Jeff's answer is what happens 9 times out of 10. I'd try to get a good power supply. Make sure you have a compatible one with your system, since SATA and ATA cords don't really mix well.

Have you considered that this could be a fried power supply?

I think it's part of the "Energy Shortage" we've been hearing about lately,
and how, our energy is, essentially, being sold to us by terrorists.

Same thing happened to my mother in law, but it was lightning rather than human caused, so her homeowner's insurance covered it.

Tuna's insurance company wouldn't cover it when her digital camera broke. They said it was an act of dog.

You should wait for Centauri to show up in his flying car. He'll have you back up to speed in no time.

Here. This is a movie you should see. (Fun trivia: THE LAST STARFIGHTER was directed by Nick Castle, the man who played "The Shape" (a.k.a. Michael Myers) in John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN.)

And, of course, Centauri was played by Robert Preston, AKA Prof. Harold Hill from "The Music Man."
