Spinning off from Garp's post in the Simpler Times, which big budget genre movie will bomb this summer?

My guess is The Lone Ranger. There seems to be no buzz for it at all, Depp's Tonto looks like a variation on his Captain Jack Sparrow (and not in a good way), and there doesn't seem to be anything else compelling about it. It looks like a reasonably fun couple of hours at the theater, but it's at the top of my list of movies that if I don't make it out to see, I won't be all that disappointed.

My runner-up pick is After Earth.

That's my top choice. Directed by M. Night Shamaylan. They should just stick a fork in that one now.

I voted After Earth. Do people really want to sit in a movie theater watching Will Smith and Junior act out in a CGI world for 2 hours?

The Lone Ranger will make a few bucks but it will drop fast after a week.

World War Z might also not do very well. It's seems to be over cost and Brad Pitt just isn't a big box office guy.

Huffington is already putting World War Z on the sacrificial altar.

If it's a fun family film with fairly good reviews ala Pirates, it'll probably do well. There's usually a sizable market for the odd non-edgy block-buster of the summer.

I didn't know World War Z was a 400 million movie.

I'm changing my answer.

That might be a mistake. Most reports seem to put it at $200 million.

Well, that is the gist of the article. That they threw 200 millions more to the project.

If you're spending that kind of money in a picture, it better be about Batman and Robert Downey Jr.

I think the star power of Johnny Depp and Will Smith will push their movies to be successful. My prediction of those options is Pacific Rim -- no bankable star or franchise-power behind it.

Batman versus Iron Man would be the top movie of all time. :ohyes:

Pacific Rim is a shoo-in, IMO, for the reasons Hanzo mentioned.

I went Lone Ranger but if I had two votes I would have said After Earth too.

I'm not interested in many of these, but I picked Lone Ranger. After Earth has no appeal for me, but Will Smith movies tend to do pretty well so I think it'll do ok. No love over here for World War Z.

Every other report I read said $20 million was spent on reshooting the end, because the Lost/Prometheus guy said it didn't make sense... which is like Slash knowing he had a drug problem when Charlie Sheen said maybe he should cut back a little.

So the budget ballooned from $170 to $200-210 million depending on who you believe.

Can we have a poll on who will be the first IMWAN to post "I don't know what everyone was complaining about, I thought <insert shitty movie> was perfectly fine."

If there was a Transformers film coming out this summer, I'd put my money on you...

I think Pacific Rim has a reasonable enough budget (around 150 million) and a broad enough international appeal that it will end up doing fine. After Earth might skate by on the combination of Will Smith and being a sci fi action movie, but I think it'll be hurt by this being the summer of sci fi action movies (Oblivion, After Earth, Elysium).

My post would be, "oh, my god, that movie didn't make any sense... but it was fucking awesome."

Never even heard of Elysium until now... seeing stills makes me think it won't be terribly appealing to the public, but I haven't seen a real trailer, so I'll withhold judgement until I do.
