Presumably Marvel has some say in the content of the video games released using their properties, some ability to okay the content or say no to the characters being depicted in certain ways.

Well, take a look at these kills from a Punisher game released a few years back for the Xbox. Be warned, it's violent.

Unbelievable.

Since they came out with "Marvel Zombies" I would believe them capable of anything.

Marvel Zombies is very tongue-in-cheek, though. It's camp. That stuff is just sheer, grim brutality.

Seems rather "Punisher-like" to me.

Wasn't that game written by Ennis?

"Measure twice, cut once."

"I forgot his name. I'll just call him 'Chuck'"

"With a turd that big, flush twice."

"Good worker, kept his nose to the grindstone."

"Not much of a criminal, but he makes good mulch."

"If Hell has a choir, they've got a new soprano."

Classic.

Hasn't DC already done this?

I don't know. But a fan actually suggested it to quesada at a con.

out here. Two words, you tell me something about them: “Marvel Apes.”

JQ: Yeaaaaaah. Yeah! [laughs] Marvel Apes! I love it! Well, duh, they’re Marvel characters as apes. I don’t wanna give away too much about it ’cause it’s one of our panel reveals this weekend, but…you know, ironically enough, this came from a fan suggestion at a convention! It was the New York Comic Con two years ago, and a fan asked, “Hey, you’ve done Marvel Zombies. Why not Marvel Apes?” It struck me at the time as such a fun, such a natural idea, that I filed it away. We tracked down that fan and discussed it with him, and where he’s not the one writing it, the idea will find its life.

"Please, please buy this so I don't look like a fool," he said.

That distinction is lost on me. Sick violence is sick violence. The idea that it is supposed to be funny is actually one I find rather scary.

It's just silliness. If Wiley Coyote gets an anvil dropped on him, it's over the top violence meant for laughs. Same as when Moe hits Curly with a hammer.

It's very similar, except its not always for humor but just fun. and usually more blood.

Have you read Ennis' Punisher run? Football punting a parapelegic (sp?) into a burning house was just the start. This all matches up to the comicbook.

DC has done apes for 50 years. Marvel just finally realized that they could do it too, now that they have 99% of the marketshare.

Yeah, that game really isn't all that different from the Punisher MAX series, or the movie.

Wile E. Coyote doesn't get blood and guts everywhere and he's all better by the next scene. It's no more bloody than a child building a tower of blocks and knocking it down. There's a very fundamental difference between that and the way Ennis and Kirkman see watching humans get literally splattered as funny.

Punisher and Marvel Zombies aren't aimed at kids, though. They're aimed at older teens and adults.

I'm looking forward to Marvel Apes.

I'm betting I'm not alone, either. Lots of people will read it who won't want to publicly admit that they have, though...;)
