I just read his first two ever appearances. (in the Batman Chronicles).
It reminded me how much I liked him as a kid, as a character on the tv show. Why isn't he always this cool?
Is the Penguin a viable character in the modern comics world?
Could he be successfully made into a movie villain that isn't laughable? (they tried in Batman Returns to mixed results I'd say, by making him monstrous).
Chuck Dixon wrote a cool penguin during his run on TEC as the club owner and mastermind behind a bunch of crimes...they used this version to great effect in the 2nd Dini/Timm batman animated series (the one that adpated MAD LOVE among other stories)...i always liked the Penguin as a villain...Englheart & Rogers did a great one shot story during their TEC run with the penguin that was a favorite of mine.
He should be to Batman what Kingpin is to Spider-Man. Batman is able to stop whatever antics the Penguin gets up to, but somehow the Penguin is always untouchable....just out of reach of the long arm of the law.
I like him. Remember him in Robin (Dick) when i was a kid. Cool Batman enemy. The 70s version is the one i like. Chuck Dixon write excellent Penguin stuff in Robin (Tim) these days. (We saw him in Chuck's first arc, and i don't doubt we'll see more of him.)
