I like From Russia with Love because of how small-scale and close quarters it is on the train. That fight scene on the train is still one of the best. And then it goes all "North by Northwest" with helicopter battles. The story wasn't very ambitious with lasers and big huge weapon labs and things. Kind of cool.

I like Goldfinger second best. I suppose most people might like these two, reverse the order.

For me it's Thunderball. I don't know even why, I just loved it from the first time I saw it.

Goldfinger for sure. Dr. No would be second.

I had to go Dr. No but the first three are pretty much perfect James Bond movies.

I love Dr. No, but the "fire-breathing dragon" takes a little bit of the luster off of it -- that vehicle was so thoroughly unimpressive.

I'd go Goldfinger, FRWL and Dr. No, in that order. Yeah, the first three were the best. They didn't hit that quality again until Casino royale, which I never get tired of rewatching. It's right up there in the perfect category. Hell, I'd put it up there with Goldfinger and FRWL.

Yeah, I love it for all the classic Bond stuff it has -- the secret island fortress, Ursula Andress coming out of the Ocean, etc.

The tightest and most rewatchable has to be Goldfinger, though.

This is a post I could have written myself, except FRWL nudging out Goldfinger.

My favorite thing about Dr. No is the way it opens in Jamaica. That movie has a different feel from all the others. Like they were still feeling their way .

I agree with Rick, too, and I 'd put them in the same order as Rick.

I could add that CASINO ROYALE is the only Bond movie that I actually like better than the first three Connery films.

Tough call. I agree that the FRWL train car fight with Robert Shaw was probably Connery's finest moment as Bond, but overall, as a film, "Goldfinger" was his most consistent film in the series. The only problem with "Goldfinger" is that once you've seen it, you've seen pretty much every Bond film, so closely did the Bond filmmakers stick to replicating the "Goldfinger" formula for so many years. (I must admit that the most recent Bond film I've seen is "Goldeneye", so perhaps the "Goldfinger" formula has finally been abandoned.)

Casino Royale was directed by the dude who did Goldeneye, so you should keep with Martin Campbell.

One of the really cool things about those first movies, especially Dr. No was the lo tech approach. When Bond left his hotel room, he yanked out a single hair, then laid it across the closet doors, slicked with spit so it stayed on there. If anyone rifled through his room while he was gone, they'd open the closet doors and disturb the hair. They'd never notice it but he did when he got back. Nice and simple. He used his wits and his muscle way more than tech and it was really refreshing. They kind of went back to that in Casino Royale as well.

Yeah, the practical spying stuff makes Bond seem more intelligent and cagey than whipping out something someone else invented and having it do all the work to get him out of a jam.
