Ive heard snippets of a planned DCU relaunch from Frank Miller and Steve Gerber in the mid-80s..did not happen..Miller used some of his Batman ideas as a basis for Dark Knight Returns..and Gerber reused some of his proposed Hawkman ideas as VOID INDIGO...

Does anyone know any more of the details? Any plans? Any links to articles about this..

It really sounds intersting...!

Steven Grant goes into some detail about it in his latest CBR column.

Sorry man, I heard vague rumblings that Crisis on infinite earths was supposed to be a jumping off/on point for that relaunch but never heard anything after....

THE KRYPTON COMPANION by Michael Eury has an interview with Steve Gerber, who briefly mentions something about what he and Miller planned to do (unfortunately I can't remember it since I flipped through the book and planned to buy it but never got around to).

I remember hearing they camped out in a hotel room for days ala Paper Chase coming up with their outline. They were going to put Superman, Batman and Wonder Women into a special imprint called Metropolis where they would redefine the characters. I don't think they said anymore about the details in the interview I read. But it was too radical for DC. (I'm pretty sure they came up with the idea on their own initiative and pitched it, DC didn't ask for it.)

Hm, on Savage Critics, Jeff Lester mentioned this in his tribute to Steve Gerber:

Quote:
Another Gerberism was the keystone for the idea of superhero as Jewish myth: Superman. At Marvel, Gerber created Wundarr the Aquarian, the superhero who is rocketed to Earth from a dying planet--except Wundarr arrives on Earth full-grown, with the intelligence of a child. With Mary Skrenes, Gerber created Omega The Unknown, a character that riffs equally on Superman and Captain Marvel--Omega is a hero come to Earth with a strange bond to a boy orphan. Later, Gerber went on to do several offbeat Superman projects. My favorite was the final issue of DC Presents where Gerber packed his entire pitch for Superman into one baffling Hail Mary: an insane Mr. Mxyzptlk destroys Argo City such that Metropolis is layered with a fine mist of kryptonite, and Superman, his power reduced, must live in pain and discomfort whenever he's Clark Kent, treading over the kryptonite impacted sidewalks of the city.

Void Indigo was interesting. I liked it at the time, anyway. Don't know what I'd think of it now, though.

I believe it was Gerber who came up with the idea that Steve Rogers had been an artist as a kid.

I finally got ahold of THE KRYPTON COMPANION from a library. In the Gerber interview was the following:

Quote:
MICHAEL EURY: I'm curious about the proposed revamping of Superman you pitched to DC in 1985 with Frank Miller. What were your plans?

STEVE GERBER: That would take hours. Conceptually, what we wanted to do was recreate the character with a contemporary sensibility, while adhering as closely as possible to the spirit if the Siegel and Shuster original. That's vague, I know, but it had to do with Superman's place among humanity and his role as a force for social justice, a theme that, judging from the character's first year, was very important to Jerry Siegel.
