In Britain they have 600 special "toad crossings" to help toads migrate safely across roads during the spring. Apparently this hasn't been enough to stop their population from declining, so now the Herpetological Conservation Trust is trying to organize 1,000 volunteers to take part in "toad patrols" that will help endangered toads across roads.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/e ... 365564.ece

The article mentions that an estimated 20 tons of toads are squashed by cars every year in Britain (I don't want to know how they established that figure!).

It sounds like they're addressing a very real environmental problem, and I wish them well at it. But boy, there's something almost surreal about this subject!

In Australia we actually have tunnels underneath certain roads, to avoid the death of huge numbers of native frogs.

I love the idea of the "toad patrol", though. If I lived over there, I'd join the toad patrol. Wonder if there's a tee shirt you get - "H.M. Toad Patrol"?

Cool post, D.L.

Awwwww... that's so cute. Helping toads is a worthwhile adventure. Hopefully the toads will accept the help and feel comfortable at their new crossing. :ohyes:

I'd volunteer but I've been too busy exploring new places on Earth in the region where I currently reside. Which is to say that I'm.... shopping till I drop. :yay:

Earth is such a fun place sometimes. It can be tricky though. There are so many shoes for sale that it's hard to know when to stop. :o

What was this thread about again?

Doesn't Australia have a huge problem with imported cane toads? Over there I'd expect the "toad patrol" would be dedicated to eradicating them, not preserving them.

You're correct, cane toads are a problem. The tunnels are designed for native frog species. I live in Victoria, so we don't have cane toads here...yet. Apparently, they're moving outwards from Queensland, as each generation of them becomes more and more comfortable with our climate.

And they're not to be trifled with. Those things are poisonous! We need "toadbusters"! :D

I've seen pictures of them. They're scary!
