I was in the LCS tonight and noticed a trade-paperback in with the new comics. I saw Star Trek on the cover, but the contents weren't obvious until I read the back cover ( the front cover referred to "The Key Collection" ...).

It's a collection of reprints of old Gold Key Star Trek stories ... and it's up to volume #4! How did I miss the earlier collections?

Has anyone read any of the earlier trades? Are the stories worth reading?

( edit: BTW, this is available via Amazon. I dunno if Linda or one of the others wants to post an IMWAzoN URL somewhere ... )

Will do, Jim, and in fact this series is up to volume FIVE! Wow.

Follow the above link and click on the image of the book cover in Amazon's listing, then you'll see clickable thumbnails for several of the inside pages so you can get a sense if the artwork and story is appealing to you. I remember the old Gold Key comics, they were fun!

I remember when these trades were announced, back around the time IMWAN started up, I think. The Gold Key Trek comics I read as a kid were lots of fun, even if they didn't always get the details right.

I do remember that in a later issue Spock faced a villain who has since reformed and gotten a slightly more respectable job!

I saw the first two trades at a local Hastings, but haven't seen the later ones. They are on my list of "must pick up" books.

The first 30+ issues are available on wowio.com for those of you in the US (and soon available in Canada I hear).

Gold Key did pioneering trade paperback collections of this title and others way back in the 1970s. Some friends of ours had a "Star Trek" trade, which I devoured hungrily while visiting them.

I've been buying "Key Collection" volumes for the library.

I have volume 3 of that series, DL. Series was called "the Enterprise Logs". The stories were totally not Trek, nor was the technology depicted at all like in the show. But I loved them anyway. :)

It's a unique take on Trek, all right. Especially the earlier issues! It nonetheless has a bizarre charm of its own. And when you're the right age, the stories seem all kinds of cool.

It reminds me a bit of Russ Manning's newspaper "Star Wars" strip. That was a very unusual vision of a screen sci-fi universe as well.
