I understand that Dave Sim is embarking on a "100 Hour Internet Tour." IMWAN is listed as a site that he may visit, and it seems that he's already registered here!

This is according to http://www.cerebusfangirl.com

Direct link: http://www.cerebusfangirl.com/artists/100hours/

Heidi MacDonald picked up this story and mentioned IMWAN and Dave Sim's tour on her blog ( http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog ... -dave-sim/ )

Will Dave drop by and say "Hi?" I guess we'll see!

Sorry guys, I didn't see this thread.

Dave's promotional tour of comic book forums is supposed to last throughout the month of February. He did say he would show up here, but as far as I know we don't have a scheduled date yet.

I hope he could answer some questions. I´m one of the many international comic fans who have always heard wonderful things about his comics but that never could read them because Dave refuses to publish them in any language different of English.

I can see his point, and understand that his comics could be difficult to translate, but know the Publishing houses are much better and take care of his products. They could make a good translation.

Be sure to pose that question to him, Roi. I'd like to hear an answer, too.

Dave Sim would be cool, but I'm waiting for the creator of Cerebus to visit.

I think that beyond simply translation, the bigger issue is Sim's lettering. He lettered everything by hand (and won many awards for it) and in many places in the book, the lettering is part of the art. The only way I can see translations happening is if he were to re-letter the whole thing himself. I don't think he'd do that because a) he wouldn't trust a translating scripter to get it right; and b) I don't think he'd trust himself to understand the translated script well enough to get the emphasis right in the lettering

That, and it'd be a shitload of work.

Dunno if that makes sense, but I can totally understand and agree with his point of view.

Please meet me in the porcine aviary to discuss this further.

Then its shame, we can fix the translation, if we made a good edition of "Krazy kat" Cerebus its nothing, but obviously we can´t fix the lettering. We would need a full team working close with Sim and even if we manage to get it this will increase the production cost of the series making it unprofitable for any publishing house.

Just a few months ago I finally bought a copy of the "Dc guide of coloring & lettering" and i realized of the tremendous work of the letterist. It can help a comic looking great or like crap. So i suppose that Cerebus will be forever in my country one of this legendary comics you will never read. But well, thats the main reason why I learned English :D

I think there are plenty of talented folks who could mimic Sim's lettering well enough. But it is a lot of work, 300 issues of translating and lettering, and I bet it don't come cheap. You'd have to guarantee a pretty strong market to make it worth while.

What is Cerebus about? I used to flip through it when I was young, and the other day I looked at it and it was beautiful.

Asking "What is Cerebus about" is a bigger question than it seems. My I am reading Cerebus thread might answer some of it. Maybe.

As short as I can make it: Cerebus is about the life and times of Cerebus the aardvark, a self-centered oaf who loves booze, is great with a sword, and has a series of brushes with great power. He becomes prime minister in a lengthy political satire, pope in a sendup on religion, a bartender in a look at male friendships, and so on. The overall saga goes from swashbuckling adventure to political and religious satire to semi-fictional biographies of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Oscar Wilde and Ernest Hemingway to extended interpretations of the Torah to length meditations on gender issues. It's 300 issues long and covers a LOT of ground.

And yes, despite what sounds like an all-over-the-map tale, it's well worth reading.

Cerebus is the auto-biography of Dave Sims, when he was an aardvark.

And that's just it...Sim's not big on "teams," especially those who work closely. And that's OK - it is SELF-publishing, after all.

The first 64 issues were 100% his work and his alone. When he got a partner (Gerhard), Sim would do everything except the backgrounds, then would hand it off to Gerhard to fill those in, and they rarely even talked to each other. From what I've read, they're cordial but not particularly friendly, and Sim bought out Gerhard's 40% of Aardvark-Vanaheim Publishing about a year ago.

I think Dave Sim is a master of expressing time in comics, an incredible artist, and the natural heir to Will Eisner. If he's not the greatest comic book artist of my generation, he's damn close and I don't know who else would qualify. The guy is a genius.
