There is a statistic floating around that 80% of people live within 50 miles of their birthplace. More than likely that refers to worldwide population. I thought I'd ask members and see what the statistic comes to on IMWAN.

I spent 37 years within 100 miles of my birthplace, but now reside over 700 miles from it.

500 miles. Closer than I've been for most of my life, actually.

For the US, I'm guessing at least two thirds of the populace aren't even in the same state as they were born, let alone within 50 miles.

I don't know. There are a few variables that won't get addressed. A major one will be military families. And I think it becomes less desirable to move if you've got a large extended family in the area.

You mean where the hospital was or where I actually came home to live for the first time?

The former is technically correct, but the latter makes more sense.

Anyway, it's irrelevant for me :)

10.78 miles from the hospital where I was born,

5.46 miles from the house I first lived in upon release from the hospital.

About 50% of Americans live within 50 miles of their birthplace. This is called propinquity.

I see that all over but can't find where they are getting it from.

Over 200 miles away.

Although, I'm living only about 30 miles from the place where I grew up (between age 4-18)

Yes, I currently live within 100 miles of my birthplace. At one time I did not, but I moved back.

For 19 years, I lived anywhere from 100 miles to 8000 miles away from my birthplace. For the last 8 years, I've lived 35 miles away.

My family moved a lot, so we were only in NC for a couple of years after I was born, then moved to VA for another couple of years, then to FL for 9 years (I consider FL home, even tho I wasn't born there and haven't lived there for over 35 years) then on to AL for a quick 9 months, then up to OH, where I am today.
I do know a lot of people who have lived here all their lives. I took part in a conference last week and that was one of the questions of the participants. The percentage of born-and-raised-here was really high.
So, as to the original question, I only lived within 100 miles of the place of my birth for the first 2 or 3 years of life.

I live about 800 miles from my birthplace.

Rob can probably see it from his house on a clear day.

There is a mental and drug rehab place not too far from me.

Coincidence.

In what way are military families not addressed? People are either within 50 miles of where they're born (or 100 now, for some random reason), or they're not. The majority of families currently in the military are not, though some may well move back when they leave the military. Either way, they can get legitimately counted in the statistics. What special consideration do you think needs to be made here?
