I picked up the Superman vs The Flash TPB last week and have been reading the stories. Reading DC Comics Presents 1 & 2, I realize how much slack I gave the stories back then.

The art in the book still holds up. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez is one of the best Superman and Flash artists in my book.

I'm not as enamored with the story. I still like it for nostalgic reasons, but Marty Pasko really threw in some oddball scientific choices. My favorite is Superman patching a dimensional hole with (basically) communications cable on a plastic wall.

There's also the way that he and Flash imprison Reverse Flash.

Whew. On the bright side, there's still that Garcia Lopez art.

Gacia Lopez is great.

I've always had mixed feelings about Marty Pasko. He wrote the first 19 issues of SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING. Part of me really likes those stories, but my brain starts to melt when I read them too.

I used to own at least one issue of that two parter in my lost youth. I'm pleased that it's been reprinted, as I remember nothing about the story after all this time. Marty Pasko wrote one of my favorite comics of all time, the Dr. Fate story he did with Walt Simonson for DC First Issue Special. I barely remember anything else he did though.

I'm looking forward to thumbing through the Garcia Lopez Modern Masters trade when it arrives in stores this summer. Though I've always been aware of him, I think I've seen almost none of his best work.
