I watched the first episode of the new Sci-Fi channel FG series. It seemed OK, although it may have been a little more Adam Strange than Flash Gordon.

Oh Lord how awful that new Sci-Fi show is....it actually makes the 1980 movie look good by comparison.
Flash Gordon lives with his mother.
Wait....let that sink in.
FLASH GORDON LIVES WITH HIS MOTHER!!!

yeah, the TV show is utter shit but the 1980 flick is about 50 times better than I remember it. Somehow, it's aged incredibly well, which is tough for sci-fi stuff, I think. It's 1980 but since 95% of the film takes place on Mongo, you really don't have much, if any late 70's/early 80's fashion nightmares.

I agree, Hank. I kind of like it, but it's a stranger in a strange land thing, in which at the end of the episode, the hero is back home again. At least he doesn't have to fly around in the southern hemisphere.

The 80's movie is a forgotten masterpiece. I kind of lump it in with Barbarella, as a kind of campy, fun science-fantasy piece. They both seem to have been done in a similar spirit.
The music (by Queen) adds a lot to it, as well. I love that movie.

What a hell of a great idea! An Adam Strange TV show! The nature of of Adam, and of the Zeta Beam are so forgiving (like a VW clutch) that episodes could be done as lavishly or cheaply as necessary. One week "Indiana Jones" , one week "Flash Gordon", one week an earthbound detective, another a super-hero, or any combo of all the previous. The possibilities are endless!

Yeah. I think you can make Wizard of Oz comparisons. I also thought about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Okay, I've never actually seen that whole movie, but again, I'm thinking about garish color schemes and loud costumes.
I don't get the Sci-Fi Channel (I only have basic cable.), so I've never seen the new Flash Gordon show. What I hear doesn't sound encouraging.

IAWTP.
It also makes great fodder when you're in the mood to play MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE HOME GAME.

This piece of cinematic work reminded me of the data tapes I used to watch as a youth, which contained an audiovisual record of the ancient days of Krypton. The only real difference is the lack of headbands on the male actors - apart form that, the film could be mistaken for a rather authentic record of life on Krypton during the lifetime of my Great Grandfather, Gramps-El.

My sister informed me that you can watch a full episode of the new Flash Gordon show on the Sci-Fi Channel web site.
Here's the link, if you're curious:

I just watched it. I didn't hate it as much as some seem to. It's certainly not a faithful adaptation, though. In this version, Flash jumps back and forth between Mongo and Earth (As Hank notes above, it's more like Adam Strange, in this sense.). Dale, Flash and Zarkov are all younger (and hipper, of course.). Ming seems astonishingly dull. There's a lot of humor.
Really, it's not bad, but it's not really Flash Gordon, either.

An Adam Strange TV show sounds like fun. It'd be like Star Trek meets Quatum Leap (or something).
