From over at Newsarama
Wonder what's gonna happen?
Lots of theories being bandied about over at newsarama, the one about it being a fakeout seems most likely to me but this one is intriguing:
newsarama gent wrote: I'm guessing it's Future Spidey who cashes in his favor from Doctor Strange to rewrite history so that Mary Jane lives her life without Peter as her husband.
Whaddya think? Discuss. Please. Because I'm bored.

I will not enjoy the books any less than I do now (I've stopped reading them two years ago), but I think it would really be a shame for he and MJ not to at least be dating. He should also be back in college or grad school at the latest. Depending on how it pans out, I may go back to reading Amazing. But I'm not going to be along for the journey, just tell me when One More Day is over.

If they're going to go to the trouble of undoing Spider-Man's marriage they could get rid of a lot more baggage. And do it in a much, much easier way. But I suppose if this gets people talking they've done their job.

I am excited about the post-One More Day lineup of artists and writers. Especially the writers. I'll be buying these.

Cool image.
Haven't read Spider-Man since the end of Civil War, though, so I can't say I'm dying to know what will happen. Was the whole Back in Black thing any good?

Dunno, I don't like JMS's Spider-Man so I haven't read it since JRJr was on the book. Didn't read his FF, but Rising Stars is great and so is B5.

So, this is what you meant by "One More Day will decide my comic buying future"? That's it then, assuming it is what it appears to be?

I dropped Amazing when JMS took over, but started up again when Ron Garney started drawing it. BIB's Spidey/Kingpin arc has been surprisingly good.

I'm a Spidey lurker at this point. Haven't bought a Spider-man comic for myself in 17 years, but I'm considering jumping on. I may do it for One More Day, or I may drift in after One More Day and discover the state of affairs that exists like a new reader, without all the explainey-wainey.

I don't really care either way. If I can read great Spidey stories with Peter and MJ married, fine. If I can read great Spidey stories with Peter and MJ split up (retconned or whatever) that's fine, too.
As for Back In Black (the JMS/Garney books) the art has been fantastic, and the story could have been great, but I think JMS made a bad call both with the choice Peter made in the most recent issue, and in the final confrontation basically being a rehash of the recent DD/Kingpin confrontation when Matt declared himself Kingpin of New York.

Just to annoy Rob, I'm going to copy and paste my posts from Newsarama and Millarworld on this subject.
MILLARWORLD
Quote: So I'm the only one hoping it is the end of the marriage, however they go about it? Quote: Quote: (Sarah Horrocks @ Aug 7 2007, 06:21 PM) * Matt Fraction JUST showed that the marriage could really work. It's much easier to write one, or even a handful, of stories where the marriage works. It's much more difficult to maintain that over a long period of time, as demonstrated by the number of writers who've attempted to do so for the last twenty years. Quote: Short of the characters growing old together, there's only three ways the marriage can evolve: children, divorce, or death. Quote: Quote: (Ogul @ Aug 9 2007, 04:05 AM) * Quote: QUOTE I can't even begin to enumerate how many ways I disagree with this statement. Agreed. Personally, I like it when heroes have a fairly satisfying personal life. I like that they enjoy what they do. Any conflict and angst should come from without, through the outside challenges coming in on them, the villains they face, rather than having to deal with bills, marriage (or single life) problems, etc. Maybe there are those stories to tell too, but they should be told with a character who isn't Spider-Man. Um...you've read Spider-Man, right? The last part of your statement is EXACTLY what Spider-Man was conceived as, and how he was written for all but maybe the last ten years.Quote: Quote: (Ogul @ Aug 10 2007, 03:46 AM) * Quote: Um...you've read Spider-Man, right? The last part of your statement is EXACTLY what Spider-Man was conceived as, and how he was written for all but maybe the last ten years. So a lot of you guys seems ot have a distorted image of who Spider-Man is (not was, is). That's fine. Maybe Marvel should make a book for you guys, some sort of "ultimate" Spider-Man, one who's still a kid, still in school, unmaried, dealing with all kinda of issues, agnst-ridden, etc. It might be nice if that were possible. I don't see any reason to retrograde the existing one though. Bolded the parts of my post that you seem to have missed. I understand completely what Spider-Man is compared to what he was. I just don't especially like it. Here's the analogy I'll use (though you'll probably disagree with it): A grown up, married Spider-Man is as wrong as a Superman with average power levels. Spider-Man was conceived as "superhero that could be you". That's his iconic state. He's the hero who has the same problems as the person reading about him, but he's also a superhero. As others have mentioned, the best Spider-Man writers are able to balance the two. With Superman, he's "the most powerful superhero". Change him from that and he becomes something less, something generic. Take away Spider-Man's everyman/problem-filled life, and he becomes something less, something generic. Batman could grow and evolve into an intergalactic bounty hunter with strange, bat-like powers, but then he wouldn't be Batman anymore.

Now I want to see Batman evolve into an intergalactic bounty hunter with strange, bat-like powers.
What bat-like powers would he have, Matt?

The power to strike terror into my phobic heart.
The power to crash into walls and heads while making a clicking noise.
The power to be completely incapacitated by a wet towel thrown over him.
The power to enter a structure by squeezing through a tiny crack, but he would be unable to find his way out again unless someone left a door or window open. And it would still take him an hour to find the way out.

The gloved hand in the opening image of this thread does kind of look like what Future Spidey was wearing in that JMS "Happy Birthday Peter" story.
