I have been watching the 90s (?) Superman and Batman shows by Dini, Timm, and friends and at the end on Boomerang, they show the old Filmation Superman Aquaman hour shorts. Even as limited as the animation was, they were way fun. Some things:

Speedy is the only DC sidekick I know to make his non-comic book debut well before his mentor. Kid Flash and Aqualad showed up with Flash and Aquaman, but Green Arrow didn't do the cartoon thing until the Superfriends years later. (Before anyone says it, Wonder Girl did appear before Wonder Woman, but Wonder Girl really was not Wonder Woman's sidekick at the time.

There was killing going on, but I was too young to realize it. Superman and Aquaman so far have sent at least one character to what appeared to be his death. The fact that he or she probably didn't die (because it's super heroes in the 60s after all) doesn't excuse in my adult mind the heroes taking apparently fatal actions to save the day.

Commissioner Gordon of the 90s Batman is Superboy of the 60s Superman.

Pat Harrington Jr., who was Schneider on One Day At A Time, was both the Atom and Speedy

Ted Knight did a lot of the voices on the Justice League and individual hero cartoons. A lot.

Both Paul Frees (of Rankin Bass fame) and Ted Knight voiced Kiro (Venusian stand in for Tom "Pieface" Kalmaku) at one point.

I feel like a kid again.

I love catching those old Filmation Super-Hero cartoons. A local station used to rerun them after school when I was a kid, and I have been watching them again on Boomerang lately.

One of the great things about them, was how short and complete the stories were. No out of costume character development going on. Civilian IDs were seen briefly, and then right into the action.

Costume discrepancies on Flash and Kid Flash always drove me nuts though. I guess I have always been a stickler for that since I was a kid.

And Kiro being a blue skinned kid from Venus, and Hal Jordan's pal, and no one noticing that did trouble me a bit.

There were, really, costume discrepancies on almost everyone. I like the inverted (sort of) Kid Flash costume only because with the real one doesn't make much sense to call him the scarlet speedster. It's yellow, for crying out loud. But from yellow Flash gloves to the Atom wearing blue briefs, to Hawkman sporting a "do whatever I need it to" claw, to Aquaman's black boots, there were things that were off all over. But they were DC superheroes and they were on TV, so I was happy.

One thing they got better than the comics, though was Hawkman's space ship. I wish his comic book space ship looked like that. It was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool.

What's Boomerang? I take it my rural luddite life is lacking something.

Boomerang is a channel from the Cartoon Network people that shows older cartoons, as new as the Dini / Timm Superman and Batman all the way back to Popeye and Looney Tunes theatrical shorts from the 40s

I do have to agree that Kid Flash having a more red costume did make more sense. That, and I have always been a fan of inverted costumes. Part of why I love Reverse Flash. I remember when I first saw Kid Flash in the comic books, I thought that he was Porfessor Zoom's sidekick, not the Flash's.

And yeah, despite tiny little differences, I have always been happy to see comic book characters in cartoons.

At long last, The Adventures Of Batman will be coming out on Blu-ray this Tuesday, February 28th. Here's hoping that Filmation's other Silver Age DC cartoons are soon to follow!

Yes, the one you posted is from 1977, the Filmation series Linda posted is from 1968.

Ah. I wonder why they're using 80s Garcia Lopez art on these. I can see a potential buyer not realizing this is the 60s cartoon because the art looks different on the box.

Yes, the Filmation art looks like someone did a very loose tracing of Curt Swan panels. I'll admit I have never really enjoyed it. Filmation kinda sucked. (Though I had to buy all their DC and Archie shows!)

Filmation seems to have been run by nice people who had their hearts in the right place...but they did not make very good cartoons.

They chose awesome projects. They did the great Tarzan cartoon of the 70's, and a legendary Flash Gordon feature film that ended getting chopped up into a failed show.

This has never made sense to me, either on their video packaging or the covers of their paper collections. It has to be put down to DC's general contempt of their Silver Age products (and customers).

They're not close to the Fleischers in animation quality, certainly. But the Filmations were the best superhero cartoons ever made.

I think it's more likely indifference and laziness from the designers -- "Yeah, this looks like an old drawing of Batman, same shit."

I think I have all the ‘60s Filmation stuff on DVD except Superboy - I don’t think they released those.

Is Superboy still a legal issue?

I wanted to like the Filmation Zorro, but I don't remember it as being particularly good.
I can't remember the Filmation Lone Ranger, either.
But I enjoyed the Filmation Tarzan adventures.
