And no one can tell me any different.
His art had really ventured into the almost surreal, and his ideas were all over the map - in a cool, cosmic philosophy kind of way. The Eternals has long been a favorite; love, love, love that series and always have. It's a shame he was never able to bring his story to a close, as intended. 2001: A Space Odyssey was brimming with ideas and imagination. Machine Man was pretty cool. Never read Devil Dinosaur ... and yeah, okay, that one looks pretty dreadful.
But the rest of it rocks! I love his crazy artwork of this period, and the way in which he utilized Big Ideas and philosophies in action adventure comics was very forward-thinking.

HE'S FREE!!
Jack Kirby had a boundless imagination and a need to create, create, create. To get out idea after idea after idea. That's why he is awesome. You don't have to like this stuff, but you DO have to respect the creative spirit he had. The guy was practically bursting at the seams with STUFF he wanted to get out of his system.

King Solomon's Frog? What the hell!? Jack Kirby had no fear. No fear! He had ideas and just ran with them. Mark Evanier said on a podcast recently that (and I'm paraphrasing here) he wished Kirby would have paused and thought twice about some (in reference to some wacky DC guy I'm not familiar with), but not me. Kirby was just, "Hey, dude on a surfboard. Roller skating guy. King Solomon's Frog. Let's do it."
That's GREAT.
This cover is AWESOME!

I always wished that Marvel had turned Kirby loose on Conan the Barbarian. Can you imagine what kinda freaky shit he'd have brought to THAT title?!?!?
...and Taft? You seriously need to get a hold of the Devil Dinosaur run. There's some awesome stuff in there too!

Okay, now I'd just like to say one thing. That is a freakin' brilliant idea! Holy cow, yeah. He'd have all sorts of totally wild snake dudes making insane interplanar magic and chicks in giant headgear with portals to new dimensions and space aliens with swords and a BIG FREAKIN' CONAN GUTTING PEOPLE IN AMAZING DYNAMIC ACTION!
Hell yeah!

I love how all the women have the Marilyn Quayle hairflip thing going on.
And the shading on Black Panther's costume is severely gonzo/yikes kinda awesome.

Devil Dinosaur is truly awesome. The Eternals is brilliant as well, but Devil Dinosaur rocked my world as a youngster. I think Kirby really understood the whole medium of comics so well, had such a finely honed instinct for it, that he knew precisely what he could get away with. No matter how crazy the idea, he knew what worked and what didn't.
I think his later work was developing into a unique art-style. It's unlike anything else I've seen - and not just in comics, I'm talking about art full-stop. He was really one of a kind.
Taft, read Devil Dinosaur. If you enjoyed 2001, you'll definitely get a kick out of it.

If that pic isn't proof positive that a Kirby Conan would be seven ways to awesome, I don't know what is.

Say, that Devil Dinosaur page isn't bad. Jack's writing is kind of swell there.
Hmmmm...I've only ever seen Devil Dinosaur discussed as a punchline. This thread is making me rethink what may have been a higly misinformed viewpoint.
