Looks like Frank has another winner... anyone see this yet?
Variety reports: Great start for "300" Box office strong for Warners film By MICHAEL SPEIER
It looks like Warner Bros.' "300" is on its way to a massive weekend, with the film, directed by Zach Snyder, bowing to an estimated $27.8 million on Friday.
Figures are still a little sketchy, as all early reports are usually just general guesses, but either way, it's a big success story.
Meanwhile, "Wild Hogs" made an estimated $7.8 million, and "Zodiac" came in with an early $2 million.

I tried to see it last night, but both of the theaters showing it in my area were sold out for all showings. Instead, I caught a packed matinee this afternoon, and didn't feel like I'd wasted $6.

Saw it. Loved it. As I mentioned in the Batsy-Watsy thread everyone I know who has gone to see it wants to go again. It is damn good. Violent and bloody as can be. But well filmed. And some good laughs at certain moments. As the movie is pretty much all special effects I have to say I could not tell were the reality ended and the effects began. First rate work.
If you've read the 300 comics you owe it to yourself to go see this. It is definitely a film to see on the big screen.
I'm going to go again.

The only time I thought it felt "Dinosaur stampede in King Kong 2006" was at the beginning, when the soldiers are marching into the wheat field in the background, and the king and queen are in the foreground. It just didn't look right to me. Nit-picky, but otherwise, I thought everything looked great.
I did wonder how Knife-Hands goes about day-to-day life, though. Xerxes had some freaky freak soldiers.

Tracey and I saw it today. I loved it, she thought parts of it were okay. It's visually stunning but, like the comic series, it plays pretty fast and loose with the historical accounts of the battle completely ignoring the Athenian-led naval battle and the 700 Thespians who stayed behind with Leonidus and the Spartans for the final battle with the Persians. Still, it's a damn fine flick!

Yeah, I recall Miller saying when the funnybook was first released that he wasn't so much concerned with getting the facts across as he was the legend.

Saw it this afternoon. Matinee was pretty full. Really loved the look of the film. A great to way to experience the bloodiest of combat scenes, and some really cool Persian soldier freaks (especially knife hands).
I could have done without all the political intrigue and bigger part for the Queen that they threw in, but other than that, I thought it was really good. It certainly captures the 'look' of the Miller/Varley work. It'll be very interesting to see how it does with the box office. Anyhow, I contributed my six bucks ... and was fully satisfied. And that's coming from a long time Miller fan.
I also liked Synder's (sp?) Dawn Of The Dead remake. Though not as good as the original, it still had a certain flavor. I keep hearing he's tapped to do Watchmen ... that would be interesting.

A sign announced that all IMAX showings were sold out for the day! So, like a few other people, I bought a ticket for a showing on a regular-sized screen. That theatre had a fairly good crowd, too. I'd say that the audience was about 90% male, though (The few women who were there looked like they had been dragged there by their boyfriends.). If that was representative, though, then it looks like most of the male population of Lansing, Michigan went to this movie this weekend! Anyway, the movie itself - Yeah, I loved it, too. I don't want to just repeat everyone else, but I do give it a big thumbs up. I like how it conveyed Miller's visual style while not being overtly cartoonish like Sin City. My only real gripe is there the movie could have been a little shorter. There were a couple scenes that dragged. That's allright, though, because the pay off was definitely there.

This is the movie that Mel Gibson tried to make with Braveheart and what Ridley Scott SHOULD have done with Gladiator. I was disappointed both those films won Best Picture. I won't have any problems if 300 does the same.

You guys really liked it? I thought it was TERRIBLE. The visuals weren't half as good as they seemed in the trailer. A lot of times the green screening and lack of real sets was flat out laughable, like when Stelios comes running up to deliver his message to Leonidas. He hops over two guys and looks like he's exhausted from running 10 feet.
Everything not from the comic was hackey and hamfisted, there wasn't an actor in it who wasn't chewing the scenery from the first "Action!' to "That's a wrap".
It looked like the comic I read, but it didn't have the same tone at all. They should have called it Frank Miller's Shouty Naked Guy Movie.

I'm glad it's doing well.
I was a huge fan of the comic book, so I saw it opening day.
It had its flaws, but I still loved the hell out of it, and it actually did some things better than the comics, especially in the end where the 10,000 Spartans leading 30,000 Greeks was an awe-inspiring image, and you knew that the Persians were going to get slaughtered (in the comics there was no difference in the presentation of the force of 300 Spartans, and the force of 10,000 Spartans at the end).

That was one of the worst parts for me, that last speech. That was for the benefit of whom? The 30 or so guys up front that could hear him? Yet all 10,000 cheered at the right beats?

It looked like the comic I read, but it didn't have the same tone at all. They should have called it Frank Miller's Shouty Naked Guy Movie. Well, if nothing, you sure seem to hate it with passion. I'd rather see that than a disinterested bunch of comments. If you were bored that'd be a shame. Tastes vary. But it obviously affected you on some level. I like the Naked Guy comment. Because the Spartans were naked in the comic. They had to dress 'em up for the movie version. Gave me a chuckle that you would call it 'Frank Miller's Shouty Naked Guy Movie'. Anyway. Shame it wasn't for you. Oh well.

I'm aware of that. See where it says "It looked liked the comic I read"? Yeah.
I got something from the comic. It was a big adventure story that put across cool action packed legend with stunning visuals and cool, interesting characters.
The movie had none of the book's atmosphere and turned the characters into parodies of what was in the funnybook, and for me the film boils down to a bunch semi naked guys shouting a lot.
