Last weekend I played a trivia game with some 30somethings from my church. One of the questions was basically this: "What 1987 Madonna comedy bombed at the box office that summer?"
I answered "Who's That Girl?"
The kids all asked me something I've been asked a lot in my life: "How do you KNOW that?"
I told them that in 1987 the defining media for teenagers was MTV, which, back then, was basically a radio station on your TV. That summer, they overplayed the Madonna music video for the movie (it helped that the song title was also "Who's That Girl?.") Videos like that were sorta like supplemental movie trailers. So even if you had never seen the movie, you were still somewhat
familiar with the movie thanks to it being marketed to you on MTV through music videos.
For those of you wondering, "Who's That Girl?" was what they call a screwball comedy that also starred Griffin Dunne (from An American Werewolf In London). When I got home, I looked up the music video and was shocked at how unattractive Madonna was in it. BUT she did remind me of what Harley Quinn would eventually turn into.
