Superheroes, non-superhero, miniseries, part of an ongoing, doesn’t matter. As long as the story is self contained and a good chunk of pages. Looking for something new and interesting.

It's not finished yet but Gotham City Year One by Tom King (whose run on Batman admittedly I did not love) and Phil Hester is the greatest comic I've read in years.

I have also been blown away by The Nice House on the Lake and am eagerly awaiting the 2nd and final trade collection to see how it all ends.

I'll second this one. I followed it in the individual issues so I have read the whole thing and it was excellent.

Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer is another title I really enjoyed. This volume is a perfect introduction and a satisfying read on its own, but if you really enjoy it there are more volumes expanding the story and world.

Aaron Lopresti’s Wraith of God graphic novel is one of the best comics I’ve ever read.

He’s going to do a reprint with a new cover, but here’s a link to the 2nd GN.

Both Human Target and the recent Siupergirl mini by Tom King are excellent.

I picked up the Tom King Supergirl on word of mouth from here, which is what inspired this thread. I got the itch to see what else I've missed out on. I'll be checking out several of these, thanks!

Hard pass on those first two. ISOM sounds interesting though, so I'll give you some credit.

Well that's your choice, of course... but you're really missin' out.

One more recommendation I just remembered. I really, really loved Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire and the amazing Andrea Sorrentino.

Immortal Hulk was good.

Robert Venditi's Hawkman series was good.

I'm curious: What did you like about it?

I haven't read it or a Hulk comic since World War Hulk. I hear that Marvel has now established that Gamma Rays come from Satan ("The One Below All" or some such thing)?

It was drawn (and even somewhat written) in a timeless, almost EC Comics style. A scarier, creepier, gross-out version of the Hulk focusing on the properties of his body being unable to be destroyed. It does explore the almost mystical nature of a truly indestructible being.

The One Below All stuff was kind of milked for too much -- I kept expecting it to be revealed to be someone we already knew, but it's essentially the embodiment of chaos/destruction in the Universe. So yes, sort of the Satan figure in Marvel's cosmology now, I guess (until the next writer comes along with his Black King, or Ultimate Carnage Man, or whatever).

For Marvel and DC, a few come to mind... (and I'll also endorse IMMORTAL HULK)

Daniel Warren Johnson's BETA RAY BILL mini-series was excellent and you don't need to know much to jump into it. Felt like it could be a movie, very cool stuff. The art is mind-blowing.

I really liked the Bendis / Derington Batman: Universe series, which was told in short installments in DC / Walmart's special 100-Page Giant experiment.

The Alex Ross FFF OGN was fairly decent -- story is serviceable enough and rooted in the Kirby run, and the art is just beautiful.

Not sure these are up your alley, but I really enjoy Andrew MacLean's HEAD LOPPER and APOCALYPTIGIRL, and Michel Fiffe's COPRA.

A bit more on Human Target. It's a hardboiled detective story that takes place in the DCU. The premise is that master-of-disguise Christopher Chance was doing his thing, hired to stand in for a person who's worried about being murdered. This time though, it's Lex Luther. And sure enough, someone tries to kill Lex but gets Chance instead. But instead of a bullet, it's poison. He's got 12 days to figure out who murdered him and avenge his own death. Aand all he knows for sure is that the culprit is a member of the old JLI. It's a twelve issue series, with one issue covering one day. There's one issue left to be published. Great story, great art - I really dig this book.

He also did Vision for Marvel and the recent Supergirl mini-series, both of which I loved. I understand he's had a big run on Batman but I haven't read any of that. Given how much I like these other three projects, I should probably check it out.

If you have never seen it and you have an appetite for B&W, check out DOA from 1950 (remade in the 80s with Dennis Quaid/Meg Ryan).

I'd say The Immortal Hulk.

I managed one issue of the next Hulk series by Donny Cates. Ugh...
