Did you guys see the recent issue of BACK ISSUE magazine that spotlighted Newton? Very informative stuff.

I can't imagine there being a bigger Don Newton fan than I. The Phantom, Aquaman, New Gods, Shazam, Batman - all beautiful. And oh how I love his Avengers Annual.

Now that DC has completed the Neal Adams Batman Illustrated series, I think they should follow it with the Don Newton Batman Illustrated series, covering all of Newton's Batman work - work that is, in my opinion, superior to Adams'. How does one go about suggesting such a thing?

Great idea Jay but no idea how it would be done. Start with a letter to DC probably.

Loved Newton's work, especially on Batman. Great stuff!

During his lifetime, Newton was one of those periphery artists whose work I noticed, but took for granted. Similar to Dick Dillin on JLA. I was collecting Infinity Inc. when he passed away. Right up to the end he was doing some amazing work.

After the fact I realized I enjoyed his Aquaman and New Gods in ADVENTURE COMICS, Shazam in WORLD'S FINEST, and the few Batman issues I had picked up that he did.

I do need to get that Back Issue issue.

For me, this guy was one of the greats.

The first American comic I ever read was the fabulous Brave and the Bold #153 ("The Menace of the Murder Machines" starring Batman and Red Tornado), which was pencilled by Don Newton.

A Don Newton Batman page was the first piece of original I ever bought. He was still drawing Detective at the time. Any day now, I'm going to frame and hang it. Maybe after the next meeting of the Procrastinators' Club.

R.I.P. to one who's greatness was missed during his lifetime.
That puts him in some really good company, though. Appropriate.

All I know of Don Newton is that Thief of Night run (was that BATMAN or DETECTIVE?), when Batman and the villain traded identities for some reason. (I no longer own the issues, unfortunately.)

There's a panel in which Bruce says to Alfred, "Events are gathering with speed and force." That's a great line, and I even use it at work sometimes.

Gerry Turnbull, a little help, maybe?
