While I wouldn't really be for such a thing, a new show recasting Picard and crew, there would still be some creative and narrative opportunities in such a series. Here's an example:

Show us how Troi's empathic powers work. Don't just have her say things like "I'm sensing X emotion from him, Captain." Have her powers be something that can be shown visually, like synesthesia. So, for example, let's take the scene from Star Trek: Generations where Troi confronts a grieving Picard and we learn that his brother and nephew have died. Perhaps we could see Troi walking to Picard's quarters and she sees an inky black mist billowing from the door of his quarters that she recognizes as sadness and dread... then she opens the door and the room is thick with it. We also see what the room actually looks like for comparison when Picard turns to look at Troi standing in the doorway.

While no such hypothetical show could replace TNG, there would be some opportunities there that could be interesting.

But I'd still rather they didn't.
