I became a fan of his when I was a subscriber to Amazing Spider-man in 1980 onwards. He had a mini-run starting with this one:

John (jnr) and his wife Kathy are two of the nicest folks ever. Met her at SDCC a few years ago, we text/email around convention season to see if we're going to be at the same place/same time (okay -- I text her, but she replies). They both always have smiles for my son and me when we happen to bump into each other. JJR is a pro in every sense of the word. He seems to me to be the bar others should be aspiring to measure themselves to.
Kathy's having some surgery this week -- so if you're reading this -- send some good thoughts their way.

I think of Romita pere as the Curt Swan of Marvel. Some people think Romita and Swan are boring. They are so wrong.

Looking at that art up there, I so prefer Sr it's not even funny. No comparison at all, when it's side by side like that.

It is really amazing how "perfect" everything he draws is -- his style is so consistent that it could be compared with Disney animators or something. He's always on model and you very rarely see any drawing mistakes. I find it fascinating that his son and him are almost total opposites in approach.

I've been reading the Romita SR. run from #40 onward lately. They never explained it, but it really did seem like the Kingpin had super-strength... BTW, I find some of the slang interesting. For example, a lot of the teens like calling each other "Dad".

Kingpin used gas on Spider-Man the first or second time he fought him. Spidey always seems to be under some sort of handicap when he fights the Kingpin. Also, I think people tend to think of Spidey as being able to lift 10 tons, but I'd bet that's only during times of great need, like ASM 33, where he had to lift that hunk of machinery so he could escape and give Aunt May her medication. I don't know if Stan Lee considered him to be that strong on a regular basis.
There's also the notion of leverage, fighting ability, etc.
