A good inker helped him in the final stages, Anderson made his inked stuff look as good as the pencils...

Yeah, Swan was cursed with horrible inkers for much of his career. Some of them appeared to just put a black line of even weight over ALL lines in the drawing, making it look stiff and dull. When you see his work with a good inker, you can see just how good he really was. Yes, he did sometimes (often?) make Superman look older, like 40 or so though, instead of the perpetual 29.
