Quote: Phil Donahue, whose influential TV talk show aired for nearly 30 years, has died at age 88.
Donahue died Sunday night of an undisclosed illness, according to a family statement provided to ABC News by a representative for Donahue's wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas. Before Oprah, there was Phil.

I watched a lot of Phil back in the day, always interesting. He was the man for awhile on daytime talk tv. RIP.

R.I.P. Phil.
I used to watch his show with fascination. I'd never seen anything like it before.

RIP I honestly thought he was much older and also had died some time ago.

I could easily have believed that he was in his 90s, given how far back his notoriety goes. You could say that almost anything beyond 88 is "much older." I suspect that this is one of those cases where many people were surprised to hear that a celebrity with a long history and little recent visibility had not died some years earlier. Though I normally refrain from commenting on it publicly, I've often been surprised to learn that a particular individual has only just now died.
