I only hope he's still got enough on the ball to shuffle around and act a bit like his old man character every once in a while. I like to think he does, just to get a laugh or a smile from his nurses. That's how I'm imagining this going anyway. If it's not the reality, I don't want to know.
Does anyone truly battle dementia, or do they just succumb to dementia over time. Unless someone has come back from dementia that I don't know about.
A former library staff member had a son who suffered from an acute dementia condition that reduced him to hardly knowing his own name and being unable to walk unaided in the space of only a month or so. He was around forty at the time. Doctors said that he would die soon. Then suddenly he began to get better. He recovered as fast as he went downhill. Last I heard he was still doing fine. I saw him myself several times during both the decline and the recovery. He really did make a total recovery--he even went back to being a serious mountain bike rider.
Nobody seems to have had an explanation for what happened. Her mother says "If that's not a miracle I don't know what would be!" Which sounds about right. There were a lot of people thanking God for that.
So yes, it is possible in some cases to recover from dementia. Besides extreme cases like this, some senior citizens who manifest signs of dementia can rally for a time. I've seen that happen as well.
