I was reading that new Byrne comic and realised that it all felt very familiar, not just because of the Savage Land, but because it seems to me that every few issues of their comic (at least back when I was reading it) they would be falling out of an aircraft! Is it just me? I think it started with Adams:

but then it seemed like Cockrum (in one of the first new X Men stories) and then Byrne, in particular, made this an X Men 'thing'. Am I nuts or is this true?

Doot's the expert on this topic, but now that you've mentioned it it does seem like there was a whole lot of aircraft-related tomfoolery in those issues. They were always crashing-landing the plane, or jumping from it, or it had been destroyed and they'd narrowly escaped, etc.

I think you've got a point.

I think you've proven your theory.

I wonder if Doot touched on this in his X-Men book?

It didn't start with Adams. There is an earlier example drawn by Don Heck. X-Men #37, I believe.

(I blogged about it, but I may have cut that stuff from the book version.)

I don't remember reading it in there, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there - at my age I'm lucky if I remember my...my...as I say it's a funny thing alright. What?

In trying to find other examples online, I found out that a) Marvel Unlimited doesn't have the X-Men stuff available (!!!!) and 2) there exists a thing called God Loves, Man Kills that I had heard of but never read on that same Marvel Unlimited and I read it. It's good! Great, great art and it reads very well, for all that it has so many Claremontisms in the dialogue.

I remember reading that story. It was a huge deal at the time, and it was very Claremontian but in a positive way. There were no giant chess sets, mysterious goddesses or sudden resurrections involved.

This also begs the question -- how many X-Men have fallen out of an aircraft?

Well typed.

All the ones that can't fly.

Ikea's range of products truly is impressive.

No giant chess sets, but you can't have everything.

I doubt that the answer may surprise us. I'm prepared to be proven wrong, however.

On another note, I wonder if there's an official list of times the X-Men fell out of or crashed an aircraft?

Now that I think about it, this has happened to the Fantastic Four a few times as well.
