I watched it around Christmas '04, for the first time since I was 6 years old and it aired. Wow, it's really awful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hamill#Car_accident
Car accident
On 11 January 1977, on the way to shoot one of the final scenes needed for Star Wars, Hamill was in a car accident, which caused damage to his face. An A&E Network Biography special from 2002, entitled Mark Hamill: A Force to Be Reckoned With, claims that the damage was extensive, and Hamill had to have multiple plastic surgeries to reconstruct his face. The nature of the accident was recounted in the A&E special by members of Mark's family, including his older brother, William, and his cousin, Eric Johnson.
Other sources, notably Hamill himself, claims that he only broke his nose, needed one reconstructive surgery, and the severity of his physical injury was greatly exaggerated. In the second Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, he is seen with a new scar along his upper lip which may have been related to the accident. Luke's encounter with the Wampa on Hoth explains the scar in the movie.

The U.S. government looked into using the Star Wars Holiday Special on detainees at Guantanamo. But they quickly backed off when they considered the overwhelmingly harsh reaction it'd get from other countries. They decided to go with water boarding instead. Less harsh.
The Holiday Special is not for the squeamish. People watching it in the 70s had built up a tolerance to that kind of train wreck. People today would be unprepared for it. I shudder to think if the full thing made it on to youtube or other internet sources.

Ugh! I watched a few minutes. It IS painful. I can still remember watching parts of it when I was a kid. Wrong. So very wrong.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of re-watching this a couple years ago, after we were done watching it, we destroyed the DVD-R in which it was burned so we wouldn't have to watch it again.

No. Dvd won't accept it. I'm amazed someone was able to get it onto a computer to upload it to youtube. It's pure evil. Lives have been ruined by that Special. I'm sure of it.

Bea Arthur's career lay in ruins after it aired.
That may not have been the fault of the holiday special, although it wouldn't have helped.
The only contribution this show has made to modern culture is the concept of 'Wookie Porn'. That gives you some idea of how 'special' it really is.
I agree with Trevor - pure evil. Everytime a kid watches it, an Ewok drops dead on Endor. That's the only good reason to watch this fiasco.
Life Day? AAAARRRGGGHH!

Not to me. We see his face for a few shots before the Wampa appears, and the scar is already visible...I think.
I'll have the DVD's shortly, so I can check for sure!

When does the extended edition come out? I'd love to see a three-hour version of this with CGI special effects.

I'd never seen this before, and knew I'd have to get it out of the way eventually. Five minutes, and I never want to see a single minute more.
