COUNTDOWN 51-48
Written by Paul Dini and others
Breakdowns by Keith Giffen
51 written by Paul Dini; art by Jesus Saiz
50 written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray; art by Jim Calafiore
49 written by Tony Bedard; art by Carlos Magno
48 written by Adam Beechen; art by David Lopez
Covers by Andy Kubert & Tim Townshend

The event of the year is here! This brand-new, year-long weekly series features a cast of hundreds where anything goes! With head writer Paul Dini and a rotating team of some of the industry’s best writers and artists, COUNTDOWN will serve as the backbone of the DCU in 2007.

When a character dies in COUNTDOWN 51, it sets off an unexpected ripple that will touch virtually every character in the DC Universe.

Even Paul Dini being the headwriter probably won't be enough to get me to buy this. Why does it seem like everything at DC lately has to begin or end with characters being killed off as a selling point? Identity Crisis - Sue Dibney, Countdown to Infinite Crisis - Blue Beetle, Infinite Crisis - too many to count, 52 - see Infinite Crisis.

Character's dying every so often is fine. But there's just something sort of sad and ghoulish about it at this point.

Not only that, but they bumped the price from $2.50 for 52 to $2.99 for Countdown.

I bought one issue of 52, the one featuring the JSA on the cover. I thought it would tie into the new JSA series, which it really didn't. Countdown won't be getting my money. Besides, didn't they do the countdown issue numbering with ZERO HOUR back in the 90s?

What will happen at the end of this series? One year ago? It'll be one big loop.

I liked this better when it was called LOST GENERATION.

I have to say, i ahted all the Infinite Crisis and related garbage. I like 52 (except the space stuff). But that is because I knew it would end. But not it is like another year of it.

I doubt I'll make it.

Dc needs it though. They have worse market share now than before the whole Countdown to Infinite Crisis. and just about the only thing selling in high numbers is All-Star Superman, and 52.

Not spending $156 on one story.

Nope.

I got suckered into the first half of 52 before I quit cold turkey.

No more.

I can buy 15 Showcases Presents on Amazon, or a couple of Absolute somethings for that price.

Looks to me like the dollar signs in the air are affecting their minds. 52 being top 10/top 15 for a year was due to the novelty nature and its ties to IC. It wasn't a fan mandate for a weekly comic series and I'd be shocked if this new weekly series continued to sell as 52 has (and 52 is down a bit in sales from earlier). I may check this out, may not. There are some Showcase and other old trades I'd like to buy, and I can't be doing it all.

I think everyone was shocked this has maintained high sales for so long-including Marvel.

Marvel is supposedly going to experiment with something, but not a true weekly series.

Same here. That 52 has been one seriously inconsistent offering. I can't see COUNTDOWN being any different in that regard.

"As the end draws near," indeed.

Wait, so what's 'Countdown' going to be about? And what is it counting down to?

Its like when I bought that Powergirl miniseries............it was just a setup for Infinite Crisis....I felt a little ripped off.

seems to me that issue 52 of "52" is the issue right before issue 51 of countdown - but what's the connection?

make sense?

edit - yup. "52" # 52 is scheduled for 5/2 release; while "Countdown" # 51 is a 5/9 release.

It's about the powers that be at DC watching their sales countdown to zero.

I understand that people buy 52 to see what happened in the DCU during the skipped year, but what's Countdown's "unique" selling point?

By the way... what's up with Captain Marvel in the white uniform/costume/spandex/get-up? Winick is responsible right?
