Confirmation of a fourth Star Trek movie set in the Abramsverse was included within yesterday's announcement for the new Trek TV series, so let's open a thread for it now. Quote: The new Star Trek TV series would continue [Alex] Kurtzman's relationship with the beloved franchise. He produced the Star Trek feature film series, writing 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2009's franchise revival. The fourth in the franchise is set for 2019, though Kurtzman is not attached.

Wow! That's very confident considering that Star Trek: Into Darkness was a disappointment, and Star Trek 3 hasn't come out yet.
Then again, the new Fantastic Four was one of the worst reviewed movies on the planet this year, and still Fox is making a sequel to that movie. So maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

Was Into Darkness a disappointment? I don't follow such things, and as much as I loathed it, I honestly have no idea if it was well received or economically profitable - which is perhaps the most important factor when deciding to make another or build on it. Did it make money?

Financially, both of the recent Trek films were moderate successes, but certainly not blockbusters. Each earned roughly 2.5 times its budget. Profitable, but nothing to write home about.

Into Darkness netted about $30M, which was something like 8% ROI after production and marketing. Not great, but better than leaving it in the bank.

Quote: JJ Abrams 'thinking' about killing off Anton Yelchin's 'Star Trek' character Chekov
Star Trek producer JJ Abrams has revealed that there are no plans to recast the role of Chekov following the death of actor Anton Yelchin last month.
Yelchin passed away in a car crash in southern California's San Fernando Valley on June 19. The cause of death was later ruled as accidental. He was 27 years old.
Yelchin appears as Ensign Pavel Chekov in imminent new film Star Trek Beyond - set for release on Friday (July 22) – and in interview with Postmedia Network Abrams has said that the character won't return portrayed by another actor and that he has considered killing off Chekov in a future film.
"I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better," Abrams said.
He continued: "I have thought about it [killing off the character], we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it." http://www.nme.com/filmandtv/news/jj-ab ... hin/412610

No replacing a dead actor? A dead actor deserves better? So, we retire any characters who have been played by actors who have unfortunately or tragically died now? What business is he in? It'd be a greater "crime," IMO, to kill off the character than to recast the character, as that's been done before, will be done again, and will forever be part of the business. Killing off Chekov as some sort of honor to an actor who played the role twice seems totally off base - unless you simply want the wow factor for a one time boost as the more morbidly inclined come to see it die on film or something. But even then, it's harder to kill off the character without the actor who plays them. Who come to see the part where someone casually mentions that Chekov died somewhere off screen?

Well, this guy has a personal connection to the actor that died and to ask someone to push aside personal feelings to soon after a death is asking a bit much.

Not in the business where the show must go on, so to speak. And no one is really saying replacing the actor in that role would be an insult or an affront to Anton's ability. It's not like it'd make him look like a shirker. So while I respect his grief and the grieving process he must go through, I can't agree killing off the Chekov character would be appropriate or even therapeutic.
But then again, they do a lot of things in that franchise I wouldn't consider appropriate, so I'm sure my opinion on this, as well as other matters regarding Nu Trek, will be given all the consideration Abrams feels it merits - which is to say, little to none.

Well, that would boldly go where no Trek has gone before...
So if Chekov is not essential to the storytelling, I guess, cut him loose.
This isn't recasting Paul Walker for Fast & Furious, who is 1/2 of the franchise.
This is the recasting of an ensemble player who is probably...1..2...3...4...5...6...maybe 7th on the depth chart of the franchise.

Really now, what major Trek wasn't "dead" at some point during the series and/or movies?

If Sulu can be gay in this alternate timeline, why can't Chekov be a Trill, and just change to another host body?

You don't have to kill Chekov to explain him not being there... Just transfer him to another ship.

Being transferred to another assignment in the fleet is the most obvious way to explain Chekov's absence from future films in the franchise. That's a far better solution than killing off the character. Of course the "real" reason is they finally discovered he lied about hold old he was just to get into Starfleet academy almost 10 years earlier than normally possible, and so had to let him go, for now, despite him being a prodigy. He may have been big for his age, but that was nothing compared to the size of the lie about his age. Can't have that. And a replacement character could be gay - and a love interest for Nu Sulu.

Best thing they could do, I think, is to not recast the character, possibly make some kind of on-screen acknowledgment that the character is not on the Enterprise anymore, and give no other details. Let the fans imagine any presumably happy fate for the character that they wish.
As tragic as Yelchin's death was---and his was the only reboot incarnation that I preferred to the original version of the character---they can use the opportunity to add another woman to the cast, possibly even the Jaylah character, who I loved. Or just stick to the 6 remaining.

It would be disrespectful to replace the actor in order to continue the character, so Abrams will replace the actor in order to kill off the character. I know that J.J. Abrams is the executive producer of Beyond, and that he won't be directing Episodes VIII or IX of the new Star Wars series. Still, I think overseeing the Star Wars series is going to be too big a job for Abrams to also oversee the new Star Trek, so I think this call will be made by somebody else. (Won't be surprised if like many things, I'm wrong on this issue.) My gut feeling is that at the risk of angering some fans---including some on this board---Paramount will cast another actor in Yelchin's place. If they do, I hope they follow Yelchin's precedent and cast a Russian actor in the role. (If they decide to kill off or retire Chekov's character in the next sequel, I won't be disappointed.)

I don't think Abrams has anything to do with any future Star Wars films, from what I read, except possibly a ceremonial credit as producer. From what I remember him saying, his creative involvement ended with The Force Awakens.
Unless I'm wrong.
