'Kingsman' director Matthew Vaughn: 'I'd love to do a sequel'

Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn has confirmed that he is keen to make a sequel.

Based on the comic book The Secret Service by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, Kingsman stars Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Mark Strong and rising star Taron Egerton as members of a secret spy society trying to thwart a megalomaniac billionaire (Samuel L Jackson) who is planning a mass genocide.

Vaughn's film has proved a hit at the UK box office since arriving in cinemas on January 29, but opens in the crucial North American market today (February 13). Asked whether he would return to make a sequel, Vaughn told Moviefone: "I'd love to do another one... But it's up to the audience. If they go see it and want another one, I would absolutely love to do it."

Vaughn also revealed that any Kingsman sequel would be centred on Egerton's character Eggsy, an intelligent youngster from the wrong side of the tracks who is trained to become a gentleman spy, rather than Colin Firth's upper crust secret agent Harry Hart.

"This movie really is the origin story of Eggsy," he said of the current Kingsman film. "And Eggsy is really the real, true modern gentleman spy. It really isn't Harry Hart. Harry Hart is the old cliché of what you think a gentleman spy is. Eggsy will be taking on a whole new way [in the sequel]."

Vaughn continued: "You wouldn't believe what we've got in store. Poor Mark Strong will be going on a journey that he never imagined. And we've got this idea to introduce the world to the American branch of the Kingsman."

"And the villain we've come up with... We've got a really fun idea for the sequel," Vaughn added teasingly.

To those that have seen it, are Eggsy and Hart related in the movie?

Thanks. That's a shame. The family dynamic was one of the things I really enjoyed in the comic.

Kingsman 2 Coming in Summer 2017

Earlier this year, Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons graphic novel Kingsman: The Secret Service became a surprise hit for 20th Century Fox, grossing $128 million domestically and another $285 million overseas. It also kicked off what would be a year filled with spy thrillers and comedies.

It wasn’t long before a sequel was confirmed with Vaughn thinking of directing it himself, and now we’ve learned that 20th Century Fox isn’t going to wait that long to release a sequel, setting a June 16, 2017 release date for the spy action-comedy that will presumably bring back Taron Egerton’s now fully-trained secret agent.

While there’s no word who else might return from the first movie–if you’ve seen it then you know why it will be hard to bring many characters back, kind of like with another Millar-adapted movie Wanted–it would be the second movie based on one of Millar’s works to get a sequel after Kick-Ass 2, which Vaughn did not return to direct. So far, there hasn’t been any word whether Milllar and Gibbons might continue their story into another “The Secret Service” graphic novel (as Millar did with Kick-Ass) although Vaughn’s movie already diverged away from the comic, so it could theoretically continue on its own trajectory.

So far, the only other movie that has scheduled itself on that June 16, 2017 date is Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3, which shouldn’t have too much cross-over audience with the R-rated action-comedy.

Julianne Moore Circling Villain Role for 'Kingsman 2'

Julianne Moore is in talks to play the villain in The Kingsman 2, the sequel to the Fox surprise hit that starred Colin Firth and Taron Egerton.

Matthew Vaughn is back in the director’s chair for the continuing adventures of a wayward tough (Egerton) from the wrong side of London who is taken in by a suave and sophisticated agent (Firth) and, a la Pygmalion, is turned into the best and brightest of operatives.

Egerton is back with the action said to move from London to the States.

Firth is not due to come back at this stage (his character died in the first movie and there was initial talk of finding ways to return the actor to the roll call, whether via flashback or even a twin brother, but those ideas were discarded, according to sources).

Details for Moore’s character were not revealed but it is understood that she will be the piece’s bad guy, if a deal makes. The Oscar-winning actress is juggling several projects, including Todd Haynes’ adaptation of kids book Wonderstruck, and scheduling conflicts could be one obstacle.

The movie is heading toward a May start for what will be a summer shoot.

Moore, who won an Oscar last year for Still Alice, last appeared The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 as the scheming President Coin.

She is repped by CAA.

Halle Berry Back in the Spy Game for 'Kingsman 2'

The actress is in talks for a role in the sequel to the 'Kingsman: The Secret Service.'

Halle Berry, who as the character Jinx Johnson famously strolled out of the sea to join forces with James Bond in 2002’s Die Another Day, is about to step into another super-spy franchise, Kingsman 2.

The actress is in talks to play a CIA head opposite Taron Egerton in Kingsman 2, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Director Matthew Vaughn is currently assembling the elements for the sequel to his surprise hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, which grossed more than $414 million worldwide when it was released by Fox in 2015.

Berry, who’s repped by CAA and Management 360, will next be seen in the thriller Kidnap, whose release got caught up in the Relativity bankruptcy proceedings but which is currently scheduled to open May 13.

'Kingsman 2' official title and plot details revealed

Director Matthew Vaughn has revealed Kingsman 2's official title and a few plot teasers.

The sequel has been named Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It will see Taron Egerton's Eggsy and Mark Strong's Merlin head to the US to work with the "Statesmen", an American secret spy society whose headquarters are disguised as a whiskey distillery.

Once there, they will join forces with the US organisation's leader, Ginger, played by Halle Berry, to combat a villain named Poppy, played by Julianne Moore.

"You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence," Vaughn said while discussing the sequel with Empire. "I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you've never seen before."

At present, Colin Firth is not expected to return for the sequel, though Vaughn has spoken in the past about potentially finding a way to bring his character back. Further casting for the sequel has yet to be announced.

Based on the comic book The Secret Service by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, the original Kingsman film starred Egerton, Strong, Firth and Michael Caine as members of a secret spy society trying to thwart a megalomaniac billionaire (Samuel L Jackson) who is planning a mass genocide.

After opening in early 2015, it went on to rake in over $400 million (£260 million) at the global box office, becoming a surprise smash for 20th Century Fox. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.

'Kingsman' Sequel Teaser Image Suggests Death Is Not the End

Click for full size

With more than a year to go before its release, Taron Egerton took to Twitter Thursday to release a new teaser image for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, suggesting that the world hasn't seen the last of Harry Hart.

Egerton tweeted the image — which features the famous Mark Twain misquote, "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated," beneath a pair of glasses worn by Hart, Colin Firth's character in the first Kingsman — with the caption, "A message from an old friend."

Whether this means that Firth's Hart definitely survived his shooting by Samuel L. Jackson's Richmond Valentine in the first movie, or just that someone in the movie wants to make that appear to be the case is likely to remain unclear for awhile longer, of course.

Regardless of the possibility of Firth reprising his role in The Golden Circle, the second movie in the series based on the Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons comic book will definitely see Egerton and Mark Strong return, alongside new arrivals Halle Berry and Julianne Moore. Berry will play the head of the U.S. equivalent to the Kingsmen, the Statesmen, while Moore is expected to play the villain of the piece.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman: The Golden Circle will be released June 16, 2017.

'Game Of Thrones' actor to star in 'Kingsman 2'

Pedro Pascal, best known for portraying Oberyn Martell in Game Of Thrones, has been added to the cast for Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

The film sequel follows 2015's Kingsman: The Secret Service and is scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.

After opening in early 2015, it went on to rake in over $400 million (£260 million) at the global box office, becoming a surprise smash.

Pascal, who also played Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos, has now been confirmed for the second film.

The sequel will see Taron Egerton's Eggsy and Mark Strong's Merlin head to the US to work with the "Statesmen", an American secret spy society whose headquarters are disguised as a whiskey distillery.

Once there, they will join forces with the US organisation's leader, Ginger, played by Halle Berry, to combat a villain named Poppy, played by Julianne Moore.

Elton John in Talks to Join 'Kingsman' Sequel

Elton John is in talks to join the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Matthew Vaughn’s sequel to his 2014 action spy hit.

If a deal is made, the pop icon will join a cast that includes returning star Taron Egerton and new castmembers Julianne Moore, Halle Berry and Pedro Pascal, among others. Mark Strong is also set to return, and the production has strongly hinted that Colin Firth, who perished in the first installment, will be coming back as well.

The new movie continues the adventures of a wayward tough (Egerton) from the wrong side of London who was taken in and, a la Pygmalion, turned into the best and brightest of British operatives.

It is unclear what role John is taking, although he could be playing himself.

Golden Circle is set to begin principal photography in London with Vaughn in the director’s seat. He also co-wrote the script with Jane Goldman.

While John has been involved in movies before — he won an Oscar for his musical work on 1994’s The Lion King — his acting efforts have been mostly limited to voiceovers for shows such as The Simpsons, in which he played himself, or acting as a narrator in DreamWorks Animation’s The Road to El Dorado.

John is repped by UTA.

Channing Tatum Joins ‘Kingsman’ Sequel

Channing Tatum has joined the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Matthew Vaughn’s sequel to his 2014 action-spy hit, the actor tweeted Wednesday.

Taron Egerton and Mark Strong are the returning castmembers and Colin Firth is due to return as well, although in what capacity remains shrouded. The movie is casting up as it heads into a production start in early May in London. Julianne Moore, Halle Berry and Pedro Pascal are among the new castmembers named on the roll call.

The upcoming sequel continues the adventures of a wayward tough (Egerton) from the wrong side of London who was taken in and, a la Pygmalion, turned into the best and brightest of British operatives.

Tatum’s role is unclear as he was offered several, according to sources. The parts ranged from supporting to cameos. He could even end up playing himself.

'Kingsman: The Golden Circle': 3 Ways Colin Firth Could Make His Comeback

It seems even a bullet to the head can't stop secret agent Harry Hart of the Kingsman.

Colin Firth's return in Kingsman: The Golden Circle as the stylish Harry Hart (code name Galahad), has been teased for months.

He was apparently killed by the evil Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) in 2015's Kingsman: The Secret Service, and now Firth himself is weighing in on the speculation about Harry's fate.

"I can't give too much away about in what capacity I'm back," Firth told Collider. "A lot of people have speculated and a lot of people have come to the wrong conclusions about it.

So how will Harry return? Heat Vision previously reported a twin-brother or flashback are out. Here are three other ways fans could see the return of Agent Hart to the Kingsman sequel.

1. He pulls a Six Feet Under

This award winning HBO drama was notable for being one of the only shows in which a character's death didn't mean they'd be off the off the show: the actor might even get more work. And just as departed characters served to guide the living in Six Feet Under, so might Hart provide continued mentorship to Eggsy (Taron Egerton). Their father-son relationship was palpable, and even more poignant as a result of Eggsy's own strained relationship with his abusive stepfather. Hart could return not so much as a flesh-and-blood character, but one that stands near Eggsy in moments of trial. He could be the Obi-Wan Kenobi voice telling Luke Skywalker to use the force. If the filmmakers did take this approach, they could probably incorporate Hart throughout the film, unless...

2. Harry saves the day

Picture Eggsy facing death in a seemingly intractable situation: locked in a dungeon, perhaps. And then cue Hart coming through the roof. His entrance as a third-act deus ex machina could provide a thrilling comeback for the ever-showy secret agent. Some hint might have to be dropped early in the film so there's something to explain how he could survive a bullet to the head.

Egerton offerred a possible clue when he shared a message "from an old friend" with an accompanying picture superimposing a pair of Hart's glasses missing an eye-glass over a Mark Twain-inspired "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. This was the first hint Hart would be making an appearance in the film. Going off Egerton's tweet, perhaps a (somewhat) bullet-proof pair of glasses saved his life in the first film. Fashion accessories like umbrellas have already been shown to deflect gunfire, so why not? And with a cast including bold-faced names (Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Elton John, Jeff Bridges), it wouldn't be shocking to see one of their characters responsible for bringing back Hart in the nick of time. But don't bar the possibility of Hart returning as a shell of his old self — an avatar in somebody else's control (as he was just before his death.) Perhaps Valentine, strangely averse to blood, handed Hart's body off to some other nefarious entity or individual after killing him.

3. The mundane way

Just before shooting Agent Hart in the head, Valentine made a winky comment about how the movie they were in was not one in which he, the villain, was going to spend the time explaining his evil plot, thus allowing for the protagonist to be miraculously rescued. It was an obvious nod to what was about to come in the moment, but wholly unexpected in the overall trajectory of the film.

Following in that vein of anti-climax, the final way Hart could live on would be to ... live on. Headshot wounds are usually pretty fatal, but not as a rule (and this is fiction, afterall). It wouldn't entirely be out of left field for Hart to emerge in dramatic light from some hospital bed with a particularly bad headache. Still, his "death" scene did look pretty convincing, complete with an extra trail of blood and a worryingly still body. The big drawback to this theory: it's not as creatively fulfilling or as wacky a revival narrative as you'd expect from the franchise. But it's not necessarily a cop out either.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is scheduled for release June 16, 2017.

Or they might just use a flashback...

But regardless, I'm looking forward to the sequel, and also stoked that Firth is returning in any capacity.

'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Trailer Gets Big Applause at CinemaCon

How do you change things up for a sequel? Try going from London to Kentucky.

The trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle revealed new details of the Matthew Vaughn sequel, such as the mystery surrounding characters played by newcomers such as Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry and Elton John.

The often subdued CinemaCon crowd reacted strongly to the footage, giving it one of the bigger cheers of the convention.

The trailer opens with Eggsy (Taron Egerton) having plenty of fun in a spy car — complete with missiles. But soon things turn south, as the Kingsman learns they are up against an an underworld organization whose members are unidentifiable — finger prints are removed and teeth are filed smooth.

When the Kingsman's mansion is blown up, Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) travel to Kentucky for some backup. There they meet Tatum's character, some sort of southern spy operative who has plenty of gadgets of his own (among them: a lasso that can cut a man in two).

There's also a look at Harry (Colin Firth), who returns wearing an eye patch.

The cast wasn't present at the viewing in Vegas. Fox is releasing Kingsman: The Golden Circle on Sept. 29.
