Live action 'Power Rangers' reboot announced

A live action movie reboot of kids TV show Power Rangers is in development, it has been confirmed.

Lionsgate, the studio behind the Hunger Games franchise among others, today (May 7) confirmed that they have green-lit a new movie alongside Power Rangers creators Saban.

"The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever," said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, while Haim Saban added: "Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent."

Power Rangers follows five high school students who morph into spandex-clad characters to fight evil and was imported from Japan by Saban in 1993. Disney bought the rights in 2001 before Saban bought them back in 2010, launching a new TV version of the much loved series which has created a new wave of young fans.

There have been two Power Rangers movies, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1995 and 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.

If they don't go racist rangers, I'm out.

'Power Rangers' Movie Casts Pink Ranger



Naomi Scott will suit up for the new Power Rangers movie.

Scott will take on the role of the Pink Ranger in the action film, which is directed by Project Almanac helmer Dean Israelite.

The announcement was made via the Power Rangers movie official Instagram account.

The English actress got her start in the Disney Chanel's TV Movie Lemonade Mouth and in 2011 appeared in the short-lived Fox TV series Terra Nova.

Scott most recently appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Martian and can be see in the upcoming movieThe 33, the true story of 33 Chilean miners who survived 69 days trapped underground.

Power Rangers creator, HaimSaban, will produce the film that follows the group of teenagers who must harness their unique superpowers and use those powers as a color-coordinated team in order to save the world. Saban Brands’ head of development and production Brian Casentini and Cinderella producer Allison Shearmur will also produce the script, penned byX-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.

Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie is based on the '90s TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which first aired on Fox Kids using footage from the Japanese children's show. Canadian actress Amy Jo Johnson played the Pink Ranger in the original TV series and two feature films.

I love how they specify live action. Like Power Rangers has EVER been anything other than live action.

I'm actually looking forward to this. The series is unwatchably bad for me at this point (and there's so fucking much of it), but this I could be into.

Lionsgate's 'Power Rangers' Movie Casts Chinese Actor Ludi Lin as Black Ranger

Lionsgate has recruited Chinese actor Ludi Lin to morph into the Black Ranger for the studio's forthcoming Power Rangers movie.

The reboot of the iconic 1990s TV series will be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) and is due out in January 2017. The announcement was made via the Power Rangers movie's official Instagram account.

Lin was born in China but grew up in Australia and Canada before returning to Asia to pursue a career as an actor. Although somewhat new to the industry, he appears poised to break out. Earlier this year, Lin had a small role in Monster Hunt, China's highest-grossing film ever, followed by a cameo in comedy blockbuster Lost in Hong Kong. He can next be seen in season two of Netflix period series Marco Polo.

The Power Rangers cast is beginning to assemble. The Martian's Naomi Scott was previously announced as the Pink Ranger, and Australian actress Dacre Montgomery is set to play the Red Ranger.

Power Rangers follows the adventures of a group of high-school kids who are granted unique superpowers by an alien force, which they collectively harness to save the world. The hit '90s TV series, on which the film is based, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, was itself based on source material from a Japanese kids series called Super Sentai, produced by Toei.

The Power Rangers script was written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, the screenwriting team behind X-Men: First Class.

Lin is managed by Andrew Ooi and Joel Morrish of Echelon Talent.

The only reason I had nostalgic feelings for The Power Rangers was Tommy The Green Ranger. As a ten yr old he was the epitome of cool.

The New Power Rangers Movie is Called What?!

The new, big-screen Power Rangers movie is beginning to take shape. Casting is being announced every few days and now we may have an idea what the film’s official title is.

According to Collider, the new Power Rangers movie is called...

Saban’s Power Rangers

“Saban” as in Haim Saban, the series’ co-creator and owner. According to their report, Saban is currently working on the script with the film’s director Dean Israelite. And while we don’t have many details on how, if at all, that’s impacting what happens in the movie, apparently all of the character names are brand new to the franchise. This is a whole new team. But, they will pilot the iconic, original vehicles. Here’s the breakdown:

• Callum Oliver – The Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus
• Priya Patel – The Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl
• Brian Olson – The Blue Ranger/Triceratops
• Oscar Fernandez – The Black Ranger/Mastodon
• Teyana Jones – The Yellow Ranger/Sabre-tooth Tiger

As of now, four of those roles have been announced. Naomi Scott is the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery is the Red Ranger, Ludi Lin is the Black Ranger, and RJ Cyler is the Blue Ranger.

Saban’s Power Rangers is currently scheduled for release January 13, 2017.
