Once upon a time, I used to entitle IMWAN threads with obscure jokes. For example, a thread about the first Despicable Me movie I used the first few lyrics of the title song. If you didn't remember that song, you couldn't find the thread. Old habits die hard, but I've learned my lesson. This is why this thread about the new Kenneth Branagh film (he's also directing) Murder on the Orient Express is actually entitled "Murder on the Orient Express (2017)" and not what I desperately wanted to call it:

I hope this is good, but the huge mustache looks ridiculous, and I don't like that last song "Believe" which seems out of place. If you aren't going to play a period 30's song, wouldn't something from Jacques Brel be more appropriate for a film starring his fellow countryman? (I mean the character, not the actor.) Most of the audience watching the film won't realize that a Jacques Brel song is anachronistic.

Part of the reason why I posted the URL link is that my Kindle Fire won't play certain embedded links. That probably isn't a problem though for most people at IMWAN.
I'm super amped for this. Daisy Ridley being in it made it a must see and Johnny Depp co-starring turns my intrest up to 11!

Believe it or not, this is only the SECOND remake of "Murder On The Orient Express". There was a TV movie a couple of years ago with Alfred Molina as Poirot. Molina has been in many movies over the years, but his most memorable role was in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He was the guy who said, "Throw me the idol, I'll throw you the whip....¡Adios, señor!" I never saw this movie, but I heard it was bad. The only thing I know aside from Molina is that it was set in the present day, which was 2001. (The movie's available on YouTube, but does anybody REALLY want to see it?)
I also see that sometime in 2010, David Suchet was in a TV version of "Orient Express" but I'll wait to see it. It's actually very possible that while Suchet may make a better Poirot, Branagh may make a better movie. Perfect example is "The Murder Of Roger Ayckroyd" which doesn't do justice to the source material which put Agatha Christie on the map. Maybe they thought the gimmick of the book was unfilmable, but I disagree. The way they did it made the murderer too obvious.* What I'm trying to say is that not all Suchet Poirot episodes are great, through no fault of Suchet.
The book "Roger Ayckroyd" is narrated by a doctor who notices a retired Poirot moving next door. Soon a friend of the doctor's is murdered, and like Watson, helps Poirot with the investigation. UNLIKE Watson, the doctor is also a suspect, which the reader tends to forget because it is told in a first-person perspective from his view. Guess who the murderer turns out to be? In the book, the murderer's alibi is established by a recording and phone call which falsely established the time of death. In the TV show, there are GIANT shots of clocks which practically scream "false alibi" to the viewer. Columbo episodes where the murderer is established from the beginning tend to be more subtle as far as time references go.
The David Suchet version was excellent. His portrayal of the character is extremely well studied, and the TV series in which he played the role is well worth a look. Possibly the best adaptations of Agatha Christie's work I've ever seen.

Well, people might know him from playing Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2, during which he had a bit more screen time and name recognition.
