Just received my copy of
ARZAK - L'ARPENTEUR yesterday in the mail from Stuart Ng (who ships FAST – I ordered this last Friday via Media Mail)... and man, Moebius ended his career on a banger. It looks like he can join the likes of Joe Kubert and Gil Kane as an artist who never had a serious decline in his skills before passing on.
I figured this would be larger than a standard American comic but didn’t expect this thing to be so massive… though I have to say, this art really deserves it. Really beautiful production values all around, this is the format the masters of the medium deserve. Stunning. I put a standard sized American comic book next to it for a sense of scale.
Other than the phenomenal artwork, one interesting touch was coloring in the word balloons. I’m always interested in how the written word integrates into the art and coloring the balloons from the same palette as the backgrounds is an inspired touch, IMO. It makes it feel like it’s part of the art rather than laid on top of it.
I don’t read French, unfortunately, so I can’t read this bad boy – but this one really is worth it for the artwork alone. Gorgeous stuff.
